My workplace operates a fleet of 14 2003 GUIII 3.0 Patrols which get driven like they are stolen. They have all racked up around 300,000kms and do alot of heavy towing (3 tonne plus) at high speed. The 3.0 Patrol I drive has ticked over 300,000kms and we have never had a problem with any of them and I know for a fact of some contractors with almost 400,000kms on them and they have been virtually untouched mechanically. As with all diesels keep them well serviced and they will serve you well.
Can't comment on the earlier ZD30's as I have never owned one. If you're looking for value for money leave the prehistoric TD42 boat anchor at the dealership and you won't look back.
so you dont actually OWN a ZD30?, your employer does..
you have never OWNED an early ZD30?
have you ever OWNED a "prehistoric" 4.2 to make comments about it?
you are ignoring your own advice!

myself i have OWNED both a ZD30 and a TD42Ti whcih makes me qualified to comment
For your information I have OWNED 9 Patrols, how many have you owned?????. The LAST four were TD42T's. I have utilised a total of 9 Patrols as company vehicles in the past 14 years after seeing the light and moving from the Bland Cruiser camp. I have had experience with engines including the TD42, TD42 Turbo, TB42, RD28, TB45 and the present ZD30. In my opinion the 3.0 is the best all round engine from a value for money perspective of the lot. As myself and 13 other colleagues have had such a good run out of the ZD30 in our work vehicles, I purchased a new GUIII 3.0 in September 2004 for my wife. Consequently my employer has just placed an order for a further 26 ZD30's. I agree the TD42 is a good old plugger and no doubt one of the best choices for serious off road work but when it comes to value for bucks for Mr and Mrs Average in my opinion you can't go past the 3.0. I never mentioned that I also personally own a 3.0 before as I thought it was irrelevant as it has only clocked up 12,000 kms.
I think you guys are getting sidetracked as the original post queried the longevity of the 3.0.
I am sick and tired of hearing about the 3.0 being bagged all the time due to so called problems in a small percentage of vehicles. Little is ever heard about the constant overheating problems of the TD42T or the early dramas with the early 5.7 Holden engine. Move on guys.
300,000kms and still going strong in my book, I feel is a pretty good effort for a so called "time bomb" waiting to explode.
Keep up the good work Nissan.

I'll take the puss thanks... No rocket ship, but will be still going on 600,000klms without trying.
Exactly and believe me all this about 3ltr patrol's blowing up being a small percentage is tripe .
You should not have to baby a diesel engine just 5,000 km services and they should go till at least 500,000 kms , the 3.0 has plenty of kw but still has to stay within emmisions , so is not getting enough fuel on one cylinder being the hottest cylinder in most cases burning a hole in #3 cylinder the 3.0 litre run from what i am told by nissan 30 psi boost to make them move .
NISSAN obviously knows they have a problem and is why they have been fixing them out of warranty , these vehicle should have been recalled but that would have cost millions.
I wanna know if anyone has ever been confirmed of the remedie to the problem. Forged piston's would probably still burn out with lean fuel.
I have spoken to plenty of people with the same problem and they sold there cars sometimes after the second motor replacement .

being the owner of a MK swb sd33t just about to clock over 500000k's i cant complain as she is as good as my mates 3.0L turbo GU, also i did not need to take it back to the dealer to have problems fixed after the first time i got her stuck in mud i will say this he swears by the 3.0L turbo even after all his trouble (Ireckon give me something i can swim away from and not care and i am happy)
