I had a snorkel made for my Hilux,( using mandrel bends ) in 1985.
It was great -- cost me $50-00.
I made ( well, the old man did ) up a template out of a coat hanger -- perfect !!!

my firts one is going to be gq i have a jig car already it will take about 2 weeks to get the finished product you would have to plumb the rubber hose to your air intake your self but thats not very hard

I'd love one like that Jeep jobbie for my Zook, but dunno about the rear facing inlet? It looks cool but what would the air flow be like?

PM me exhaust dude if you want to chat.

Also, does anyone know what diameter the tube would need to be to accept the inlet/top of a Safari unit?...3"?

Cheers

Ross, there are a few vehicles out there that no off the shelf snorkel is available for eg. Daihatsu Feroza and Rocky (plus many others I'm guessing?)

That would be a good market to tap into. I'm fairly sure the one design would suit both a Feroza and Rocky as the body is virtually the same. I know you'd get a fair few sales off current members in the Daihatsu section. ;)

I made one for the Mav', except I just used rubber bends, as aesthetics aren't an issue with my car.

The only issue I now have is that because I used normal exhaust tube, its rusting. Only a bit, but it does contribute to clogging air filter. I'd suggest using stainless (cost$$) or can you powder coat the inside?

Only issue I have, otherwise its great!! and cheap!!

Yeah Dean has raised an issue I am concerned about with rear facing snorkels. I built a rear facing once for my old Rangie winch truck and, even though I couldn't be 100% sure, when driving down the road at highway speeds it seemed to lack a bit of go. When I lifted the bonnet and disconnected the snorkel it "seemed" to get better. What I am highlighting here is that I had no technical data to back up this seat of the pants feeling but if you think about it ... it is a possibility.

To test this theory, place a hose with one end in water, hold an airhose beside the other end out of the water. When you operate the air hose, the vacuum created as the air rushes past the end of the hose should suck the water up the hose. Then wouldn't a rear facing snorkel do sort of the same .... create a bit of a vacuum whereas a forward facing one will provide positive pressure at speed?

Or should I be calling the mythbusters in on this :D

Cheers

but with that exact same setup think about how much crud would go down the thing! it is a massive 3 inch whole without any mesh at all. maybe you setup abother intake in the engine bay for road driving and then switch it to the snorkel for offroading. like the warm and cold air switches on some old cars.

what about the old slr5000 toranas with the huge bonnet buldge, designed to allow the low pressure air that pillows up against the windscreen to be sucked into the engine, kinda like a crude snorkel, just backwards and on top of the bonnet...? They must have worked okay, as didn't brockie go alright in one of them, before the flux capacitator or whatever chrystal thing he had?!
