Your correct, the sunroof will not open. I never use the thing as it rattles and irritates me, :bad-words: and it's never that hot here that I'd be desperate to have it open. I set the rack height with the roof open before I did any bending and decided that it looked stupid, almost like it was on stilts above the roof. I decided that I'd just leave it closed and make the rack more asthetic. ;)

Next few jobs are sorting something with the rear suspension, tubing up a rear bumper, and making a false floor and storage system for the rear. :D

I'm off for a CAT Scan on thursday, so I won't make any more progress till after the weekend as I'm really busy in work.

Thanks.
I haven't done anything with the bent spring yet. I looked at putting a 4 link in, but to get reasonable link geometry I'd need to move the fuel pump and butcher the handbrake cables etc and I was hoping to keep it as standard as possible.
A 3 link could be the way, as it might give a little more clearance. :D
I'm off for a search.

Nice work

Post by Pommie B*stard »

Very nice workmanship on the old Sporty fabs mate. Good to see another
Sportrak owner in the UK who actually likes using it the way it was meant
to be used.
Useful to see your a pro grease monkey, I may well be tapping you up for help / mods someday. ;)
Keep up the good work and the pics.

Jon. If you have a monkey, I can grease it. ;)
So what spec is your car then? Have you done many mods?

Mac. :D

FFS Mac, my keyboard's now swimming in spat out coffee after looking at that pic!!
Kinda reminds me of a bloke I worked with way back.
Anyway, pretty standard 96 ELXi with K&N, MRT extractors, Colway 235/75 AT's and a thirst for oil at the mo'
I do have a mate with some shackles he's modding to lift the leaves but I've been waiting bloody ages for him to finish them. :bad-words:

What's been done to yours then?

So far very little.
I've shaved the front bumpstops and wound the front torsion bars up.
Extended rear shackles and pro comp bushes using standard rear springs.
31x10.5x15 Colway C trax MT's on chrome 8 spokes.
Ripped out rear seats, ply lined and full height dog guard for my Husky/velociraptor...lol.
Home made induction kit, soon to be replaced with a home made snorkel.
Tubular front bumper with 4x 7 1/2" Spotlights and 2x worklamps.
Tubular rock sliders.
Tubular roof rack with 6" Spotlights.
2 1/4" 2 box straight through exhaust with de-cat.

The next few mods will be:
Replace drivers seat with a Cobra Daytona aand fit a 4 point harness.
Make tubular rear bumper.
Make and fit a snorkel.
Replace rear springs as I bent one off road the other week.
Fit a second battery and split charge system.
Fabricate some d-flex rear shackles or make a rear 3 link system.

I've got loads of other things I want to do to the car, but I want to keep it quite sensible as I am also building another more extreme Sportrak. The other car will have a 3.5 rover V8 and 3 speed auto. Toyota Hilux axles, 35" or 36" tyres, external rollcage, inboard fuel tank, LPG conversion, DIFFLOCKS , and front and rear winches. I've got everything I need to build the car apart from the difflocks, tytres and winches as they will be the last thing to be fitted. I just need to spend more time building the cars and less time getting them muddy. ;) :D
