RoeDao wrote:apparently, even the tacho adaptor isn't going to fix the overdrive issues... so i connected a switch and run it manually. Works a treat!! Also got the trans serviced today, and it's like driving a new car!! i'm stoked!! the mechanic made a new bracket and adjusted the TPS better... it holds gears now, changes when it's supposed to, and won't slip any more. Apparently thats what was giving me the heat problems. Without the TPS in the right position to ramp up the pressures internally, the bands don't function as they should. If i had of driven it to Rover Park this weekend the way it was, i would have been trailering it home. Bartso has the tacho adaptor and his doesn't work either...... i can even feel it accelerating better now. My fuel economy should improve a heap!!

good stuff mate would you mind doing a pic of your tps set up cause my bracket is not so good
btw i got told by an auto trans guy who was real keen to sort out the prob of it dropping out of over drive is because the round spacer you bolted on to your ring gear (i think) is to small in length one day i will get around to it

the mechanic that did mine today thought that sounded odd..... although he said he couldn't count it out altogether. But the manual switch is the way to go... plus the TPS position, because even in overdrive, the clutches can still slip.... thats why my overtemp warning light came on the other day even driving in overdrive. Worth sorting before the gearbox fries (frys? my grammar sux) itself.....

What's the chance of providing the wiring diagram of the torque converter lockup switch. I don't have a service manual for my 4.5 GU Auto and with the larger 33" tyres, the transmission lock up calibration, (throttle position v's speed) is out considerably.

I just want to manually lock the converter up, until i get the 4.625 or 4.88 diff gears in.

Can you post a photo of the wiring diagram.

Grant.

:) :)

yeah well i cant think of anything else that could be doing it i might have to find someone with an auto to tell me what voltage the tacho signal puts out and check mine from marks? not sure
(any chance on that photo too mate? when you have time)

here's a pic of how it's set up.... a little blurry, but it was as cold as a witches t!t outside and i didn't wanna stand around too long trying to get a better picture..... i have ordered an adjustable carby linkage to use in place of the wire connection it currently has.

here is a picture thanks to Chaz on the Patrol forum.......

I have done mine with just one wire from ignition to the lockup wire..... his set up cuts out when you touch the brakes, and it is set up for a GU.... will work on the GQ, but you don't have to worry about it stalling because you can't lockup the torque converter in 1st gear.

he has done a web page on it.... very helpful indeed!! i am going to base my setup around his when i get the time.

Gent's ,firstly is the engine and loom/computer from an Auto donor or manual?.I have just been through this with a customers auto patrol with 185kw ss motot/factory auto. As it turned out the auto loom/computer is NOT compatible unless you use electronic holden auto. The loom and pewtr needs to be from a manual,in saying that ,a Guru in Melbourne stuck with the auto crap and reconfigured the pewter. We are happy, customer is rapt, and the pootrol lives to cruise another day.Let me know if you are still have problems and i'll give you his details. Cheers Dave@PlayTime 4x4

Thanks heaps Roedao. That wiring setup looks great. This definately should be in the GQ and GU bibles under Auto transmission tech.

I'm going to wire mine up real soon. :D

got it on the highway today... it's a new car!!! the trans works better than it did on the back of the Nissan motor!! just need to adjust the TPS back a bit... it holds 3rd up to about 95kph under even the slightest acceleration.... with the converter locked up, it changes back and forth from 3rd and 4th no problems and accelerates good.

mine may have been from an auto but mine is a VN motor and the auto wasn't electronic then so i don't think this would make a diff
