Seriously, I NEED to know how much oil this engine should have!

I'll hopefully have a juiced up battery by tomorrow - can't wait.

Fill it to the full mark!!! seriously it is about 5.5 litres including the filter.
It may take quite a while before the tappets start to quieten down as they are probably pretty sticky.
make sure the oil pressure light goes out within say 10 seconds. If it doesn't, stop the engine and prime the oil pump with vaseline after letting it fully cool down. This is probably the most important thing.

But I still have no idea HOW to prime this oil pump. We're talking about the unit that sucks the oil up from the sump, right? Then I would have to unscrew the oil pan (which means I have to drain the oil, again?), right? What exactly is done with the vaseline? I assume it's "vaseline" as in the brand that makes petroleum jelly? And how would you guys reach the oil pan, unhinge the rear shackles (eg. front axle) at the frame?

Not to be nagging, but I would really like to hear ya'lls opinion on this:

"So, if I have the diesel/flush-oil in for awhile, use the motor normally (so it gets cold, warm, cold, warm, etc) and change the oil later on - would the flush have the same efficiency as if I changed it right away? Would diesel oil have any bad affects in the motor?"

And this:

"I assume the oil is dangerously hot right after shutting off (how hot?) - how long should I wait to drain the oil? (I don't want the sludge to dry up again, of course). I figured revving the motor for a 10-minute period is OK - or should the headers really be glowing?"

Oh, I forgot something.

Couldn't get ahold of diesel engine oil, nor oil filter on the gas station (surprise!), so I have to check out the local car parts store for this.

My father suggested to mix normal engine oil with clean diesel (1/5 oil and 4/5 diesel???) and flush the motor with that. How does this idea sound, is it feasible? How long would you run it? Could this harm the engine anyway? And in what order would you attack things here?

After this, I'll change the oil filter and put in fresh oil.

Thoughts?

Geez mate you are "making a meal of this". ( old Australian expression meaning to overcomplicate things.) Just whack some oil in a start the bloody thing. By the way to "soft" start it take the plugs out and turn it over on the starter for about 30 secs /1 minute.after putting say 1/2 teaspoon 5ml of oil in each cylinder. This may build the oil pressure, then again it may not.
Diesel oil is little different to petrol oil, except it has more detergent for cleaning. I have used it in my car and noticed no difference in how dirty it gets etc. You cannot damage the engine with it. Some people use it all the time.
The oil pump is outside the engine and the oil filter is attached to it, on the Swedish passenger side . To take the cover off you undo the four ?bolts on the cover plate. BUT you must have a new gasket available as this sets the clearance on the rotors. The odds are that the pump will prime so do not worry about priming it yet. Worry about it if it doesn't. then I will tell you how to prime it.

Hehe, sorry about the meal - I'm just thinking while sitting and wating for the damn battery to finish.

But for flushing I'm NOT using *motor oil for diesel engines*, BUT *diesel fuel mixed with motor oil* - I'm just not sure about how much of each to mix! Diesel alone wouldn't lube worth shit, I guess?

I still appreciate the input. :)

I just drained off what's left in the sump - surprisingly enough it was as much as nearly three (3!) litres left. And this is with no visible oil, or even moisture on the dipstick at all - what's up with that?? And again, how many litres does max and min on the stick imply?

Oh, and I figured I'll pour the diesel down the dipstick tube, it seemed like there was a lot of debris down there.

When finished with the diesel-flush - is it safe to fill up with new oil at once, or should the diesel remaining (if any?) be removed somehow?

i wouldnt run it for very long with diesel in the sump it will KILL your bearings

I wouldn't use diesel fuel on first start up under any circumstances.

The cam lobes would be dry, and possibly the cam bearings, and without quick, good lubrication they could be damaged. if you want to use diesel do it later after the engine has run for several hours, but I would not do it AT ALL.
There are engine flush products around if you want to flush it such as Wynns.

PS , the reason it has 3 litres left is so when slack people do not look at the oil, there is still plenty to allow operation on steep slopes, even with the dipstick at empty.

Hell, I'm not using only diesel, I was thinking about using a 50/50 (used-)motor oil-mix. This will almost be equivalent to 5W-viscosity, and should build up oil pressure and lube any wanted bearings?

Using 50/50 diesel/oil would be a VERY bad idea.

And I'm still waiting on my damn battery to finish, I think my charger is a little fucked - cheap junk. I want a booster.

the disel will not mix with the oil completely and will sit at the bottom of the sump thus will be picked up buy the pump and go through the engine first foooorkin the bearings just normal oil will be fine
