They also used "mothballs" for much the same effect, the Napthalene in the mothballs upped the power considerably so youd often see trucks pulled up near big hills and the driver dropping in a few mothballs for a bit of added grunt in the long climb ahead.

The ratio was around 1 mothball per 25lits of diesel

well, i pushed it as far as I dared. Got 423k's outta the tank :cry: . Granted, i did not baby it over the last few days. over the next few weeks i'm going to drive as effeciently as I can, one tank on straight diesel another with petrol... see if there's much diff. But i cant see it being too drastic.

I can't see the logic to this. I'm sure petrol won't ignite from compression the same way diesel does. Now, the petrol may be ignited once the diesel starts burning, anfd result in a cleaner burn ??

Given the lack of lubricity in modern diesel, and it's going to get worse, I'd be very reluctant to add something else to thin it out.
