while were on the subject of dot.i got told today that i could fit a 3l td into a spook and get it approved....i have the papers comming.

I spoke to a dude at the RTA about a year ago about driving with no doors for a zuk. He said that you can legally drive with no doors if the compliance plate DOES NOT display the number "24".
If you look at your compliance plate which is located near the brake booster it will have a shit load of numbers on it. I looked at my 1988 Sierra`s compliance plate and 24 is`nt on there.
But he did stress that your side mirrors have to be used still.
He did`nt mention anything else.
But that was a year ago. Sounds like it may have changed.

I`ve been cruising around every summer with no doors and never had a problem.
One cop pulled me over late last year with no doors on and I thought I was in shit, also the 33`s stick out a few inches.
But he only wanted to check out the rear suspension as his brother is doing a zuk up. I guess it depends on the cop....lucky for me.
One of my mates is a cop and he says that most of them would`nt have a clue about 4x4`s. They are mainly after the WRX`s and HSV`s.

sounds good to me.i guess from the comments you could just bs the dot or police and they wouldnt have a clue.

Today I called the RTA in NSW and asked the question about no doors.

I had a long conversation with a gentleman about this issue, and his opinion was that you should be able to drive a sierra with no doors.

He told me about ADR29 and how it covers side impact intrusion bars - this ADR came into effect in 1997. All vehicles prior to 1997 would be exempt. He then told me about ADR2 which covers burst proof locks. This ADR came into effect from day dot (being the second ADR) and any sierra would have to comply to this ADR.
He told me his opinion is that if a door is not fitted to the vehicle ADR 2 should not apply as there are no door locks (he gave an example of a mini moke - post ADR2 and no doors).

He then spoke to vehicle standards in the city who advised him of a guy in Newcastle who was defected by the police for driving with no doors. The guy in the zook pulled out an engineers report showing that the vehicle was engineered to have no doors. As usual the policeman did not care what the report said and defected the vehicle anyway.

The zook driver then wrote to RTA vehicle standards and complained about being defected, and sent in a copy of the engineers report. Vehicle standards overuled the engineer and upheld the defect notice.

This created a precedent that the RTA is using as a rule for if there is a similar occurance.

Although,

The guy I spoke to advised that HE believes that as long as the two rear vision mirrors are still attached, it should still be legal to drive with no doors. The problem is that RTA vehicle standards does not have the same opinion as he does, and since they have the power to overule an engineering signatory, they make the decision in this case.

I also found out that on four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles you are not allowed to fit a wheel rim that is wider than the largest optional fitment to the rear of the vehicle from the manufacturer, but I will make a new post about that conversation when I have a bit more time.

Suzuki doors are no more removable then a hilux door so can i drive my hilux without doors?

But they are still bolt on.

2 10mm bolts and a small clip hold an EA falcon door on and they can be removed a lot faster and easier than a zook door but they are still bolted on and are not classed as removable. You actually only need to loosen these bolts to remove the doors.

Basicaly the way i see it is if no doors was a factory option in Aus you should be sweat but thats not the case with a zook.

Suzuki can be bought from the factory with removable soft doors. Early 1 litres had this option as did LJs. Foreign variants still had this option until very recently so I'd imagine that this is the out available. Get a factory part number and theoretically all should be good

Its OK . it was americain beer .. would be fine if it was XXXX as well

we used to have an LJ50 - it had soft top/doors however it had a intrusion-bar (of a sort) that you could put across the opening.
from what i've read here, and from a safety point of view, i think you could get away with the intrusion bar idea in a newer vehicle and it would make your passengers feel safer. but we don't worry about passengers eh!
