he's in the army and has been loading supplies up in darwin for the last 3 weeks for the east timor efforts.
he told me that he was loading onto the ships brand new cruisers that had a 'heap of power' and a decal on the rear saying '3700 bi-turbo'
he popped the hood and sure enough, twin turbo diesel V8.
they were for the federal coppers that are going to timor, they had all the light racks and stuff for the coppers but also had in dash sat-nav (not sure if it was aftermarket or not?)
so my guess is that there will be a 3.7 litre twin turbo v8 diesel released in the not too distant future.
just thought i'd relay what he saw first hand. i'm bummed he didnt take a pic with his phone! apparently they look pretty much like the 78/9 series.

Not meaning to offend anyone but this is starting to sound like BS. I just can't see toyota releasing a new twin turbo 70 series (IMO unlikely in itself) to the aus government market before it's even been unveiled overseas...
Just my 2c - though I'll be watching news reports on timor very closely

I know where your coming from and wont take offense...but...
I'm only relaying what my brother told me that he saw. He doesnt know anything much about cruisers but was interested in it as i have a 70 series swb.
I too wouldnt have thought that the feds would get some new cruisers pre-release?? but only the other hand i trust my bro.
hdj105: My bro worked there for 3 weeks only and has since returned to base (Richmond Air Force Base) So he cant take pics (i wish he had of though!)
So i guess i'm just giving a heads up so that anyone else with contacts to those serving in darwin/east timor can be on the lookout!

I've got a mate over there now, and given him the heads up.

"...nuevo motor diesel. Este motor diesel V8 de 4.4 litros con doble turbo ofrecerá una potencia de alrededor de 220 kW y un par de 580 Nn"
=(very) roughly tranlsated as "...new diesel motor. Diesel 4.4L V8 twin turbo, 220kw and 580Nm"
interesting....
goes on to say (i think) that petrol engine options are 4.0L from prado, 4.7L V8 and in the Lexus model a 5.8L V8

Thanks for the translation roughtly
Well looks like it might be true - it amazes me with the price of fuel within Australia they would be looking at a big rig & engine combo like this.
As for the general body work - might have to be like the new hilux it will have to grow on me over time - first glimse it looks like the sheet metal on the front of an f truck or dodge ram?
Thanks

Yeah mate, but think of the amount of F trucks you see around. Well theres heaps near me. Holden also has their 6l V8 in the Commodores. Seems to be a lot of bigger motors coming out recently.

I wouldn't put much faith in that, it's appears to be a Spanish translation of the article published in 4x4 Aust. mag at least a year or more ago, even has the 4x4 Aust. logo at the bottom.

More efficiently built, torquey motors dont need to be driven as hard. my mate gets better economy from his new f-series (semi loaded) than i do from the 2.0l petrol work van.

Not sure what it's about (can't read norsk)
It does mention "1CD-FTE common-rail" (never heard of it, and can't find anything) and "4,4 turbo disel V8 220 kW 580 Nm".

That article is from 4x4 australia. I have the mag at home, it was published a long time ago and the blue truck is actually a ute sold in the states (cant remember what they wrote, might be a Tundra).
I would not have any faith in the article at all, total speculation from memory.

IIRC, the original 4x4 Aust. article stated "V8 TT diesel based on 2 x 1CD-FTE engines". I assume the 1CD-FTE is some sort of little 4 cylinder TD Toyota makes for some application.

True, they have it in the US if thats what you mean. Not much chance of them making a RHD version by all accounts. I don't think the FJ cruiser is the answer to the twin turbo question. And yes, it is hideous!
