My mate just picked up a 1979 LTD with a 351 and FMX gearbox and extactors for $800
they are out there but if you don't want the 351 then a 350 would be the next choice

It all comes down to what you like.....
I went with the good ol' 308 . Cleaned up the bores, threw in a new set of rings & pistons, added a nice cam (not to wild but enough to get things going), high volume oil pump, cleaned up the ports in the heads , new valves, springs etc, port matched the standard spread bore manifold to suit the heads and rebuilt the Rotchester carb, added an electric fuel pump as well as LPG and fitted a good electronic dizzy plus I've made a 4" snorkel for the motor.
Now I'm not saying this is the ultimate setup but it suits my type of 4 wheeling to a tee. So far I have clocked up a heap of kays both on and off road plus I've done some deeeep water crossings that haven't stop me yet (I hope that I haven't muzzed myself now) and the 308 has proven to be reliable, fuel efficiant and it's great fun .
The only problem I've had is in keeping the clutch together, so far I've destroyed 3 in 18months.
Only the clutches though not the pressure plates, apparently it's the torque thats killing them as they are crushing the springs and breaking the rivettes in the centres only.
So far I've used a Repco custom made clutch (lasted 4000kms), Daiken clutch (lasted 7500 kms), Daiken safari tuff (this lasted the longest at 12mths) & Daiken safari tuff modified Dyna model (still going).
I'm thinking of going to a solid button clutch as my next step.

so many people say go 350 have u all driven a 4wd with a 350 or just seen them go?
having driven all of the comon small blocks over the past few weeks the 350 both of them were disapointing just lack off iddle torque had to ride clutch to get them to move and thats usless offroad.
and i was impresed with the 308 torque rite from iddle and reved just as hard so thast what i'll be sticking to and hey it's still a ausy v8.
so
1st 308
2nd 400 chev
3rd 351
4th 350
5th 253
from experiance thats how i rate them tho i'm sure modified the results would be diferent.

I have a 350 chev ramjet motor in my gq patrol. I bought it as a new crate motor, it has 260kw and 540nm torque. I am very happy with its performance, im running 35inch mudders and 4:11 ratios and it goes well. My motor is injected and i run dual fuel setup (LPG) I couldn't afford to run it on straight fuel if you put your foot down it will drink, gets around 13mpg. Go the Chev

Yep small V8's are like that, I had a twin carby 3.9 Disco motor in an early Rangie, it was a ball of fun screamed it's nut off at 6500rpm doing donuts on the beach.
One of the Shorty boys had a 253 in a FJ40 at Connondale Gymkana one year, there were 350's, 351's, 308's and even a 454, but the best sounding 8 of the lot in the mud was this little 253, never missed a beat, screamed it's nut off doing rooster tails all weekend, while the bigger blocks rumbled & blated & misfired.
I like a big grunty V8, but if you're going to hit 6500rpm, it sounds better in a V8 than a 4 or 6 cyl.

go the 350 and put a cam in that is suited to low down torque.
i have driven 308, 307, 350 and 400.
the bigger the cubes the better. don't waste your money on the 308 go the 350. or better 454.

I have a 350 Chev in one of my Rangies with a TF727, LT230 3.56's and 35's, If the axels don't snap first, it will light up all 4 35's on the road.
I just has a quadrajet on it and a cam.
I bet the 350's you drove had holleys on them didn't they.

Is this with the centre diff lock locked and front and rear lockers locked in
, otherwise its impossible you'll just be spinning the front left

I have always liked the 308 Red motors... they have always turned me on.
A 350 is cool but i think if you go CHEV go 454

Both Chev and Holden V8's are 90 deg V its just the chev is a much more compact motor . As for engines ive had 253's, 308's V8's , 3.8 V6 Holdens and Chev 262, 305, 350, 383, 400 small blocks and 454 B/Block ( current ) and what i discovered is that there is a substitute for cubes and thats more of them. You cant describe the feeling of driving at a 1000 rpm and to hit the pedal to the floor and all wheels just instantly hook up with no clutch of gear change is just ace.
Go the cubes

Actually mine used to spin the front right sometimes too, with the 3.9 Disco motor

i have no idea what carbies they had but i plan on stroking the 308 to maybe 355 then get some serios power out of it

Money wise and for the power would definitely be alot cheaper to stroke the 350. the 308 needs machining and the cranks are expensive. with the 350 just chuck a 383 crank in there and its all good

I gotta agree with Wally - his 80 is a beast and a weapon on the track.
But I still like my small block
