We recently did the same thing when we stretched my brothers coily.
It has Rhetts old tray on it. It is the same as his new one, just not quite as tidy. We elevated the centre of the tray closest to the cab and made it a lid and the factory tank is mounted under there.
We plan to run the spare laying down on an angle over this into the dropped section, there is room for a 35.

yeah thats a nice tray..i will be doing something similar to this for sure...3mm checker plate sounds like the go then. Also i did remove the fuel line but it was not of a concern because i have just changed the tank...which had no fuel or vapour in it...

just to put a size to things mine can fit a 35 inch tire in the centtre section.

as for steel thickness you don't want to go 5mm for the checker. mine is only 1.6mm and the box is 3mm wall thickness. there is 8mm plates under the roll bar though.

yeah rhett will be going real thick under the roll bar like you are supposed to..will be going thinner checker plate to..trying to keep it as light as possible seems to be the biggest problem when building these things...80kg....hmm gives me something to work to for sure.
