I had 4wd systems locka front and rear in an FJ40. I have no mechanical background, however was able to install the lockers myself front and rear.

The rear bangs and clicks a little on road, especially when reversing a tight turn eg into/out of a car park. I found that when putting the foot down esp in the wet (had 327 chev) that the rear locka gave extra grip as you had to lose grip on both wheels to really wheel spin. Otherwise you don't really notice it.

Front was not noticed when hubs are unlocked around town, however when hubs are locked and you are going down a hill, the car wants to point straight. With no power steering this was a major pain to turn the car going down steep slopes.

For less than $1000 it improved the 4wd ability of the vehicle more than any other mod (tyres, raised suspension, V8) and was well worth it.

That said, I now have an 80 series and have ARB air lockers fron and rear. These are (obviously) better for reasons listed in other postings on this site however they cost around 3 times the price. Horses for corses I guess.
