Well mine is spua and flexes fantastically, rides beautifully, has stock steering and was very cheap to do as well. I reckon mine handles, rides and flexes better than other Zuks I have driven with SPOA. It also behaves better off road. I'm sure you can set a SPOA up corectly but when they are done incorrectly, which what I have seen more often than not, they are a step backwards.

I wouldn't recommend the back yarder do it but rather someone who understands suspension and steering geometry.

All hail Greg our glorious DMA leader  (finally found a use for this emoticon)

settle down boys settle down. the reason i want to get a SOA is because i wanted to get a decent amount of lift but not too high?
i read on the other thread that SOA is better than reset leaves so i thought i would go SOA instead. i want a decent lift beacuse i wanna run some 33's without rubbing. i also want a decent amount of off road clearance plus i also wanna look cool! lol doesnt everyone?
i am a little worried about the Centre of gravity also with running a SOA?
is this a problem if i run stock springs?
is that brown 60 featured elsewhere in this thread running stock springs?
wow that is preety high
thanks
Mick

for 33s on a 60s, i would say old man emu springs and some trimming might even be enough. at most a 2" body lift. forget about spoa and the hassles with it. save your money for decent rubber and lockers.

yeah stock springs on the poo, but there is 3" of body lift on it aswell and 35"s

it ran 35s with only the body lift fine ,you could prolly do a 2" body lift for running 33s

Measure the thickness of the axel where the u-bolts are... That will be the minimal amount of height you are going to gain if you do the spring over conversion... I guess you need to decide if you think that is going to be too high.

Do some measurements when at full compression to work out how much more space between the axel and the wheel arches you actually require in order to fit 33's... How close is it to the distance you are going to raise your car by when you do the spring over conversion (i.e. how thick is the axel tube)?

in regards to price i rang up total 4wd centre and they sed they dont really do soa's but roughly the price will be round 1800
engineers is the big killer
he sed 850
by memory 60 axle tubes r around 80mm
uve gotta add they height of the spring pack aswell

Yep, 80mm. You've got to allow for perch height also ~40mm.

YAY!!! people talking about my car!! LOL

Hi guys, I am dan, and I own that brown thing.

BudyTunna I just sent you a PM about my spring over. And I forgot to save a copy for myself..... would you be able to send it back to me and I will post it up here, with a little more explanation?? Thanks

Well, yeah, my brown sixty is high, but those photos are like the day after I did the conversion!! It is still to have the 3" body lift taken out, and it will be just fine to run my 37z that I now have.

Umm..... just trynna remember a few of the things that were said up there..... yes.... a sprung under car can have just as much potential as a SOA car, but when you are talking about cruisers (not zukes) you are speaking about a LOT of car. I had 3" body lift and stock springs for 12 months, and was locked up in the rear, and did a LOT of hard 4wdriving, but they are too low still. Drag the belly heaps, and drag the arse end around heaps. Its my beleif that cruisers work best with SOA. Leave the SU for jeaps and zukes,,,,,, they seam to work really well when set up.

Of course the cruiser can too. 2" body lift anf you will easily fit your 33's. Or just 2" spring lift and you will fit them too, and retain a decent ride. 2" body and 2" spring, and you can fit your 33z or 35z and it looks pretty PHAT too!! So yeah, really depends what you want.

I wanted more than I had, so I SOA for the height and some more usuable flex, and I chopped the arse end off to get some good rear angles happening. and yeah,,,,, its all up to what you want to use it for, and your driving style!!!

Have a read through my members thread, and i will post up the info that I just PM'd to bundytunna when he sends it back to me ;)

Cheers. Dan

just added this to my "members" thread, so thought I would add it here too

okay, I have had a few people PM me asking how I did the sOA and also how much it cost me. well I thought that maybe so that this thread can be used as a bit of a reference asrticel too (very basic reference!!) I would post up this reply that i sent to a chap earlier ;)

Remember that prices vary heaps, and most of this work a lot of people can do themselves with a bit of help. There may also be steps left out, and some people will have different ideas of way to do things, so use this info as a guide only!! cool.....

g'day dan
my names XXXXX and i own a 60 and im looking to SOA
just wanted to know how u did yours?
how much lift did u gain?

HEY HOW ARE YOU. *****private jibber jabber******* ......WITH MY SPRING OVER I GAINED ABOUT 6" TO 8" OF LIFT, USING STANDARD SPRINGS. I WOULDN'T CONTEMPLATE USING LIFTED SPRINGS AT ALL WITH A SOA.... IT WOULD BE SIMPLY TOO HIGH, AND UNDRIVABLE OFF ROAD. THE IDEA IS TO LIFT IT, AND GAIN SOME EXTRA USABLE FLEX, WITHOUT GOING TOO HIGH. I HAVE A 3" BODY LIFT THAT I AM TAKING OUT. BECAUSE IT MAKES IT A TAD HIGH. IF WHEN YOU SPRING IT OVER, AND IT STILL DOESN'T FIT YOUR TYRES, TRIM THE GUARDS!!

did u use standard springs or reset lifted springs?
what other mods did u have to do ? eg brake line ext swaybars etc

I HAD TO EXTEND THE BRAKE LINES BACK AND FRONT. JUST BOUGHT EXTENDED ONES FROM A BRAKE HOSE SUPPLIER. YOU HAVE TO GET THEM CUSTOM MADE. COST ABOUT $90 EACH. I ALREADY HAD THE SWAY BARS OFF THE CAR..... DON;T REALLY NEED THEM.... BUT IF YOU REALLY DO WANT YOUR SWAY BARS FOR ROAD, JUST MAEK UP SOME DROP BRAKETS FOR THEM, MAYBE EVEN INCORPORATING A QUICK RELEASE PIN SYSTEM SO YOU CAN TAKE THEM OFF WHEN YOU GO OFFROAD.

was there much fuggin around involved in the installation?

ALL UP IT COULD BE DONE IN A DAY WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS AND A COUPLE OF MATES. BEST IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO AN OXY KIT, A WELDER, AIR RATTLE GUN AND AN ASSORTMENT OF SOCKETS AND SPANNERS. NOTHING MUCH ELSE REALLY THAT YOU NEED.

roughly what did it cost
any information u could supply me would greatly appreciated
cheers

INSTEAD OF GOING INTO WHAT IT COST ALL UP, BECAUSE I STILL DON'T KNOW BECAUSE I GOT A LOT OF HELP FROM A GOOD MATE WHO OWNS A 4WD SHOP, I WILL WRITE A LIST, WITH AN APPROXIMATE COST FOR EACH MOD. IF YOU CAN'T DO ALL THE STUFF YOURSELF, A COMPLETE DRIVE-IN/DRIVE-OUT SERVICE INCLUDING SHOCKS ETC IS ABOUT $3500. BUT AS I SAID, IT REALLY IS AN EASY JOB.

BASICALLY YOU NEED....

*UNBOLT THE DIFFS FROM THE CAR, AND GRIND OFF THE SPRING PERCHES
*PURCHASE NEW SPRING PERCHES X4 @ ~$25 EACH
*WELD THEM ONTO THE TOP OF THE DIFFS, MAKING SURE TO ROTATE THE PINION 12 DEGREES UPWARDS FROM THE ORIGINAL POSITION, BACK AND FRONT
*CUT FRONT STEERING KNUCKLES, AND RE-WELD BACK INTO ORIGINAL POSITION (IE. 12 DEGRESS BACKWARDS TO RETAIN ORIGINAL STEERING GEOMETRY). ~$200-300 TO GET SHOP TO DO THIS
*BOLT DIFFS BACK IN PLACE WITH EXTENDED U-BOLTS, USING THEM IN THE "U" POSITION. COST ~$100 FOR 8
*FIT EXTENDED BRAKE LINES BACK AND FRONT ~$90 EACH LINE
*PROP SHAFTS WILL NOT NEED TO BE EXTENDED. THEY WILL BE THE CORRECT LENGTH STILL
*STEERING -- SEVERAL OPTIONS
--> WELD AND BRACE SECOND FLIPPED STEERING ARM ONTO PASSENGER SIDE ~$200 FOR SHOP TO DO
--> PURCHASE ONE OF MANY VARIED STEERING KITS AVAILABLE RANGING UP TO $1350 FOR A COMPLETE "HEAVY DUTY HIGH STEER KIT"
*ORIGINAL SHOCKS CAN BE USED, BUT PREFERABLE TO MAKE NEW TOP AND BOTTOM MOUNTS BACK AND FRONT, AND MOUNT LONGER SHOCKS. COST VARIES BUT MY OPTION WOULD BE TO PAY ~$300-500 AND GET A SHOP TO WELD ON NEW FRONT SHOCK HOOPS, AND ALL NEW MOUNTS, AND INSTALL LONGER SHOCKS ~$500-1000 A SET
*A TRACK BAR ON THE REAR DIFF WILL MOST PROBABLY BE REQUIRED ALSO, WHICH WOULD COST ~$600 FOR A SHOP TO MAKE UP AND MOUNT
*ONCE DOING THE SPRING OVER, YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO REMOVE OR ADD LEAVES FROM THE SPRING PACK, DEPENDING ON WHAT WEIGHTS YOU CARRY, AND THE STATE OF THE EXISTING SPRINGS

I HOPE THIS HELPS OUT!! ANY MORE QUESTIONS, OR IF IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE MISSED SOMETHING, JUST LET ME KNOW!! CHEERS, DAN

ok have now decided that spring over is the way to go
i decided this because of the extra flex i could get from the spring over
now i just need to find someone good enough to be up to the job of the conversion
any ideas
i am based east of melbourne
thank you all for your very useful information
regards

Pimpin 60 I have a SOA 60 series if you want to drive one before you do it
I Love my SOA but there are a few different ways to do it. I would recomend a shackle reversel at the same time to minimise wander in the steering (i have yet to do this) I also have hy steer but you can do it cheaper.
I live in victoria about an hour out of melb towards philip island,
I did the SOA myself it isnt that hard to do as long as you know someone
that is a competent welder.
I would post some pic's but am technicaly challenged on the computer

If you want someone to do it for you ring the dude from Eureka in dandenong

allthough i dont own a soa 60 i too am replacing my suspension and was thinking bout an soa
i decided not to because of COG
ive spoken with a few ppl with soa 60s they say the flip em off road and sit em on their arse
i have decided instead to go 2"bl and 3"sl with some extended shackles and 35's
altho not as much lift as soa still preety bloody good and a tad easier to do and much cheaper as well
cheers

The COG is a fair bit higher, Mine is 5'' higher at the moment
with flat standard springs. I find this setup to be great with heaps of flex
I havent tipped it over "yet" But I have nearly rolled over backwards twice
because you tend to try and find obsticals that are a little harder or higher
or deeper (bog holes are so much easyer) If a tree up to about 600mm has fallen across the road that you would normaly get out and cut up to get through, you would drive over it if possible.

If you do a 2"bl and 3"sl and longer shackles your lift will be 6"-7" your COG will be the same as mine.
If you put on 8" rims Reveresed and full offset or 10" with 2" offset
it will help your Cog which ever way you decide to lift it

Good luck which ever way you go and drop in and show me when it's done
could be a fun trip to the bush in it

the main thing to remember is that for every inch up try and go an inch out to help with stability. Also take it slow when you first head out 4wding. Don't start straight away on the hard stuff cause you think you now have a kick ass car. It will behave very differently than you remember so just ease into it. Take progressively harder lines in small increments to get used to the new balance points etc

im new to this forum so please dont make fun of question if it is stupid but
my question is: are spring over axle conversions relatively easy and cheap to perform?
i dont know much at all about suspension etc so i would enlist the help of a professional suspension shop to perform this modification
would it be a cheap exercise?
any help or information would be great
keep wheeling

I performed a spoa on my old zook, took less than one day and at a cost of a few electrodes and grinding/cutting wheels. Note this was just the spring over, shocks were extra. I was amazed at the instant difference to the zook! My new zook was done at purchase, however if it wasnt, i'd be straight into it! Love the difference, its a cheap asses way of getting mods.
Recommend it to anyone!

if i get 2-3"susp lit and 2"bl it isnt really the same as 5" of lift from soa is it?????????
other wise i will rethink soa
good point grimbo
i think it is necess to go out 1 inch for every inch up

Essentially but SOA gives the lift and still lets you run saggy old flat springs which will flex more than curved ones which give 3" lift. Flatter the springs the more flex ;)

i am still very much interested in going down the soa route
you say that you need to go 1 inch out for every inch you go up
how exactly is this possible?
i realise by fitting larger tyres but i am already running 33x12.5x15 mud terrain tyres
so if i achieve around 4-6 inches of lift how do i compoensate for the other say 3-5 inches that i need to go out with??

Mick

Offset on your rims: 2 inches
Wider tyres: 2-4inches
Spaces: 2-4 inches
