Is there anyway by looking at a Patrol to tell whether it is a 4.2D and not a 2.8?
As in the ads there are a fair few that just say "turbo diesel" without mentioning what engine

If it is an ad for a GQ and says 'Turbo Diesel' probably 99% it will be a 2.8, because the 4.2 never came standard with a turbo.

Could also look at the engine number. All TD42's start with 'TD42-?????' and 2.8's start with 'rd28-???'
Early gu's anything with a topmount intercooler is a good chance of being a 2.8lt also. As the intercooled TD42T GU didnt come out till 2004.

SMAC.
Think you need to re-read it.
Aus spec GQ's never had factory fitted TD42 turbos (if there was there wasnt many).
The GU patrol did come with the TD42T and TD42Ti (or TD6 as nissan are advertising it as).
