And why would it be a silly idea????
How is it any different to fitting a Chev, Holden or Windsor engine.
What because it’s not mainstream or a common conversion it’s silly????
Up until a several years ago nor was the 1uz but now it’s one of the first engines mentioned when asked hilux engine conversion.

not to say that it wont fit, anything will fit in anything, for instance a big block in a mini!

Sure you can put any engine in anything, but how does this comment relate to fitting a Cleveland into a Hilux.
Putting a big block into a mini requires a ground up rebuild, brake mods, suspension, chassis/body strengthening, firewall/inner guard fab work and so on.
Not to mention engineering cost and trying to get it on road. So how does that relate to putting a Cleveland into a Hilux that would be no harder than fitting a Chev, Windsor or Holden.

I love the Clevo and have had several wicked versions but I would also have to say it’s not the ideal engine for a Hilux. It’s not silly as such but there are better alternatives.

Several reasons are:

Main factor is it weighs a tad over 100lbs more than a Windsor.
A lot wider - the less width possible aids in cooling.
They are now too old so finding a good one can be hard.
Clevo’s do not come with modern factory EFI, which kills them if you are doing a transplant in an existing EFI truck, so LPG is only alternative.
EFI Windsor’s ceased only 7 years ago so there are plenty available.
More performance parts now available for Windsor and it has a factory roller cam etc etc.

4 there are same capasity engines available from the same manufature that are smaller and better suited.

i have had a fair few cleveland powered vehicles, and horses for corses, i also had windsor powered ones. but for a hilux, you need a lighter, narrower and less airflow/cooling capasity dependant engine.

I was aware of that, I have owned enough Fords, rebuild enough 302/351 CLEVELANDS and seen them fitted into a hilux to known that there not that much of a monster to fit a hilux.

dude, theyre big for their displacement. I remember lowering a 302 clevo into the engine bay of my XM falcon for a joke. It would not have fit at all with the headers bolted on Needless to say the 302 windsor fit beautifully

Not only are the clevo blocks chunkier, the heads are not tapered like the windsor so you end up with essentially, a much wider engine. Basically the windsor is a more compact and lighter package which suits the hilux more than a bulky clevo

if yoyr looking at around the 5l capacity go the windsor beter than 307 chev and 308 holden,

i found a 94 efi windsor with loom and the works for $1800 so they are cheep

If you get a 351 Windsor block all the 302 stuff fits except the lower intake manifold. The big plus of the 351 is that you can stroke them out to a 420ci. No more worries about bottom end torque! I've got a 351 Windsor in a Cortina. If it fits in the corty, it'll fit in the Lux. Just get the engine number of an old scrap 302, stamp it on and nobody will ever know (unless they measure the deck height, about an inch taller).

i'm currently doin a v8 conversion on my hilux. its a wb statesman 308 withan offset ground crank 350 chev rods and 60 thou shaved off the pistons. it comes in at 333ci and should put out anywhere up to 400 horsepower. oh and its runnin straight gas. i'm runnin a turbo 350 auto as well. its not on the road yet and wont be for a little while longer but it should go pretty hard
