what right do you have to speed on their roads...pretty sure that you actually do lose the points..Ruff would be one to ask as he managed to get done for speeding(how in his car i will never know :finger: ) when we were in Sydney a few months back...

as for the rego issues i think if you were to go to the Cape in your car with 35s etc i doubt that you would have any dramas at all providing you dont have an accident and dont do anything stupid while driving..police do have better things to do than pull you over for driving a mildly modified vehicle on the roads however if you are driving a deathtrap (bald tyres, rust etc)or something that is so obviously not allowed on the roads then they will pull you over for sure..dot up here find it easier to just see a car on the road and they note the rego plate and send you a letter saying that due to their increasing attempt at providing safety on the road your vehicle has been selected for a random inspection blah blah blah...gets the desired result for them..

The exception used to be ACT which had no points system (hence I held an ACT licence at one stage). Can an ACT person confirm the situation there?

Beastmaster and sundry,

I live on Cape York (Weipa) and most if not all the vehicles you see up here have moderate suspension lifts (most 2inch), run standard tire sizes, that is the size that came with the car from new. These vehicles do all of the tracks and some more that most out of towners do not know about. I really do question the reason other than having to do competitions why this is all you really need. I have a chopped GU wagon with 265MTR's, 2inch king springs and tough dogs. With a good diff lock in the front (we have an ARB) most cars are almost unstoppable. We have been all over the cape with this vehicle, my HJ47, and our old GU ute. I am also up and down the Penisular Development road a couple of times a year with the wife and our two girls when going on holidays to Cairns and we have an arm chair ride. I have seen a few lifted SWB's come unstuck as they are too high and do not travel well. Yes they are soft but roll around like a ship in a cyclone. These are just my observations over the 16years I have lived in Weipa. Russell.

Im sure Ive lost points in nsw on my qld licence. you have to obay by the road rules in what ever state you driving in at the time. I thought your vehicel had to comply with the regulations of the state its registed in but could be driven on any state.?

Beastmavster wrote:Probably not... dont get me wrong, there's plenty of illegally lifted 4wds up here on the road. But it's your risk and you need to be aware of it.

A GU on 35"s doesnt look that bad, so long as the lift kit in it's not excessive (eg no 6" and 7" lift kits or worse yet 7" spring 4" body like soem people seem to HAVE to do).

I thought GU's came out with bigger tyres, but according to the nissan website the 7.50R16 is still the biggest rubber they come out with. 235/80/16, 265/70/16, 265/75/16 (utes only) and 275/65/17 are all smaller.

Also make sure all other things are done to make it look appropriate - mudflaps, flares etc. Every little bit helps.

Even so, remember it's your risk and your choice.

I would question how much you really need 35"s to do a cape trip considering you've got at least 2700km each way before you even hit the gravel anyway. Even living in Brissy, the thought of taking a train to Cairns is appealing and probably cheaper than fuel. There's more than enough distance driving anyway and you can get nice and pissed on the train... remember much of the cape is dry zones anyway....
yeh i have only really lifted it 3" and stuck 35s on it instead of the standard 31s that came with it.
other than that theres nothing really that stands out. yeh ts got a bar, spotties and snorkel but it doesnt stand out. well i dont think it does.

it has the big diff under it so i need every bit of clearance i can get

Agree on most of this. I have friends who've done the cape in Patrols on 31"s and as such I see no reason why I couldnt do so either.

My lift is 33"s and 2" suspension lift so nothing particularly extreme... with the shorty that gets me most places I want to go, and if it doesnt then it's usually either my fault for picking the wrong line, or it's better I dont go there anyway.

While that mans it's not as capable as my suzi was I think that's probably good for me... it means im growing up a bit and dont have to have the biggest and best of everything.

If the rules in QLD changed to be more lenient I'd probably still run the same setup anyway. If I want to get further offroad it'll be through a front difflock or LSD, (rear difflock already fitted) which will be fitted before I attempt the cape.

I sent an email to QLD Transport
Hi,

I need info on laws for modified cars that are visiting QLD from NSW. I live in NSW and my family & I are currently planning a 4 week trip to the Cape in my 4wd, we will also be joined by two other friends in there 4wds.
My car is a Ford Maverick and has a list of modifications (needed to travel the cape) that have been certified by my engineer and is 100% legitimate with the RTA.
Now the problem i face is that a friend from QLD told me that i cant take my car on that holiday (which it what ive been building it for) because it dosent meet the QLD DOTS, is this true for someone just visiting?

Reguards Daniel

p.s. any info/help with this would be much appreiated as i would hate to think ive just waisted the last 12months (and $$$$$$) building this car and in trip preparation with my family & friends
There reply was.....
Hello Daniel,

Thank you for your email.

Your suspicions are correct. Whilst the vehicle is in Queensland the
vehicle could be issued with a defect notice by a police officer should
your vehicle be in breach if the Qld Vehicle Standards. The issue of the
defect notice would be at the discretion of the police officer. We suggest
you carry your approved modification documents (a copy) whilst in
Queensland. The modifications area has advised that your alternative is to
acquire a modification approval from a Queensland Modification Engineer.

The contact number for the Queensland Police Service is 07 3364 6464 and
the direct line for our Modification area is 07 3253 4851.

To ensure you receive accurate advice in relation to your specific enquiry,
please telephone 13 23 80 between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday (Local
call charge in Australia. Higher rates apply from mobile phones and
payphones. For international callers, please phone +61 7 3834 2011).

A qualified Queensland Transport Client Relations Consultant will be happy
to assist with your enquiry.

Have a great holiday.

Post them up here as you go.

i think you will find that if your vehicle is engineerd and road legel in NSW as long as you hold a NSW drivers licence you can drive that vehicle in any state of australia and you can't be touched provided every thing else is roadworthy lights ,tyre tread ,mud flaps ect. however if your mate in QLD was to drive it up here he would be up the shit because he dosn't hold a NSW drivers licence

as for the maximum lift in QLD it is 50mm overall body and spring combined so either you have a 50mm body lift or you have a 50mm spring lift and thats it not both unless of corse you have about a 1'' spring and a 1'' body and provided you have not exceeded 1/3 the the original bump stop height that is the rule in QLD simple as that.

Not true on both counts.

We've got a written response from QLD saying thqat the engineering status of the vehicle in any other state is irrelevant. What matters is that it meets the requirements of the state it is driven in.

As to why you think being from NSW somehow trumps every other state I have no idea.....

The maximum without QLD engineering approval to be legally driven on QLD roads is specified as 50mm or 1/3 suspension lift... and +15mm in tyre size.

Thats it.

Even a NSW engineered Body lift is illegal on QLD roads unless it is approved by QLD transport.

As to what the go is on accepting other states engineering certificates I dont know, but QLD does not do so. As I said before, I would expect other states to act the exact same way, unless both states have signed up to NCOP, and those modifications have been engineered under NCOP.

I have asked a qld transport officer this exact question. He said that even if they did defect your vehicle all they can threaten you with is to CANCEL YOUR QLD REGISTRATION. OH NO.

He said he had dealt with such situation and aslong as the vehicle looks like it complies with the requirements of the state its from and you have the documents for any major mod, they are fine with it. NSW doesnt have mod plates does it? so you gotta carry your engineer documents.

not sure how long a go this happened, but a while back your points never carried accross from state to state, but the definatly did sort it out as too many people were getting away with it,

on the side, driving a NSW modded 4by in QLD has never been a problem, me and other mates have been pulled up by the cops in QLD, i was breath tested and the cop looked at the truck and told me it wasnt legal in QLD but cant do anything about it casue its registered and engineered in NSW and aslong as the car and report matched, and there were no other defects like blown lights, bald tyres it would be fine,

Had a mate pulled up in QLD for green parkers, and the cop told him that it may be acceptable in NSW, but it definatly wasnt, so he had to sort them out, other wise next time he saw them hed be defected,

any 4wd mob will tell you that DOT has told them

2inch susp 2inch body is all your allowed
