Yes a combination is there, but the Yanks would't have come over if they weren't driving on Pro Comps. The tyres did play a big part in it, I have heaps of pics of just how well they did work. Just ask the Americans and look at their results in comps over there and see just how good the tyres actually suited to this style of event.
To quote Dustin Webster from Team Red Bull "the best beads in the business, nothing comes close."
An awesome event full of excitement, well worth the journey from Melbourne.
Let's not forget all the hard work that goes in from behind the scenes. Sam Overton, Lil' Rich, Scorers, Judges, Caterers, Rcovery Crew, The Catering from the Local School, the ladies selling the drinks, and not to forget all of the others that helped out making such an awesome event.
Go the procomps
PROCOMP -> What more can I say?
from what i have heard and seen (video and piccy's) i think it might have a bit to do with the tyre's. there were place's that the tyre's stayed were they were meant to and did not slip like some of the other tyre's did.antt wrote:anyone think it was aided by the pro-comps themselves? or just a complete package (driver+spotter+buggy)???

but the overall package's were top knotch too.

The tyres played a part...but the combination of experience and the fact that rock crawling is these guys profession (and obscession) meant that they should have kicked the Aussies as hard as they did.
Becca and Dustin had the best strategies ALL weekend. They knew the rules and thought outside the box on many occasions to end up taking the best line with the fewest penalties.
I know one thing is for sure. The Aussies that drove on the weekend will be infinitely better for the experience. Driving against the quality of the Yanks will be the best thing for them.
Well done to everyone who participated/helped.

well i watched it... and i would have thought ferog was the better driver, but that'd mean she was an even better spotter... had to laugh (and almost got an outers worthy pic) of ferog "rock stacking" throwning a rock in the big drop off hole on stage 1... the rock was hardly bigger than her hand (which isn't big) i cracked up...Hekta wrote:So is he a better driver, or are you a better spotter ?ferog wrote:basketcase wrote:Would like to know that one too.largesuzy wrote:who won the judges cup??

Roctoy, you gotta be pleased with ally... especially her effort on stage2 on sunday... my camera ran out of tape just before she hit that first ledge with feeling... apparently little rich was getting bugged that he set that course too hard, but when you guys drove it i think he breathed a sigh of relief.roc70y wrote:hey tiny, where did ABD write that? did you just want to say that yourself and blame someone else for itTiny wrote:ABD wrote:I think the roc7oy buggy looked better on its roof....aslo what wheel base was it and is it extendable?
correction it looked good on it's roof but it looked great on two wheels!
my buggy is about 98" wheel base and it is not extendable (it's against the rules to have an extendable wheelbase during competition anyway.)
of course we won't mention the unlocked hub at the top of A5 on saturday will we?

no don't mention that...bad_religion_au wrote: Roctoy, you gotta be pleased with ally... especially her effort on stage2 on sunday... my camera ran out of tape just before she hit that first ledge with feeling... apparently little rich was getting bugged that he set that course too hard, but when you guys drove it i think he breathed a sigh of relief.

Firstly.... Congratulations Sam Ovaltin! The advancement in Rockcrawling in the past 12 months has been amazing and you have been the biggest contributor.
Likewise congrats needs to be passed on to all the competitors, marshals, judges etc for rounding off a great year with an awesome finale! I am waiting with so much anticipation for next years events.
After spotting for both POS and Ballsac in previous rounds, spotting for Tom this round was by biggest challenge to date I'd never really watch Tom drive much as every time I saw him on a course - he was usually on his roof!
On Sat morning when I got there, Tom was only there to have fun and be a part of it. By Sat afternoon, we were in 3rd place overall and he was as hungry for as a win as anyone. Midway through Sun we had even elevated ourselves to first place but what followed were a succession of DNFs that killed any chance of a place. Even so, (and I'm sure I speak for Tom here as well) we had an absolutely amazing time competing against some of the world's best professional rock crawlers and giving them a run for their $$.
Now I'm REALLY looking forward to next year

I'll second that! He will definately be one to look out for. As will the ABT buggy. Anything with rear steer and esp Pete with the portals will kick ass. So much more forgiving than having front steer only where you have to get your line smack on every time. It should be a good year.Wendle wrote:

*If anyone is interested in the judging side for future WE Rock events, I can tell you it is better than being a spectator (even without driving the buggy) so get up there.
The best comp yet and I think WE ROCK will rock in 2006 and will be off the planet in 2007 with the international finals HERE
We have the competitors, now we need the spectators to get behind it. So tell everyone you know and don't miss Australia's NUMBER ONE series.
Thanx again Sam and all the guys who make it happen, I'll be judging all the events next year, just don't make any around late March to mid April as I'm in the High Country then.
For Sam and the guys top effort

What a great event.
Its good to see that all the hard work that was put in payed off.
A big Congrats to Becca and Dustin on such a great win. I am sure that if Becca was to compete in the Unlimited's next year (WEROC USA) then she will really give all the guys a run for their money. What you guys achieved in a budget rig with weak axles was amazing and just proves that with a well thought out approach and great driving, budget buildups can still mix it up with big $$$ rigs.
Also a Huge congrats to Tony (Ruff) and Wes for a great win in the Pro- Mod class. It was great to see that even after working till 10, 12 or even 1 at night on other rigs that you were still able to hold it together and take out a great win.
Also Congrats to all the other competitors that were brave enough to step up and take on the challenge.
Well i had a mixed weekend.
Even though i didn't win (or come close to winning) i did however achieve what i had planned to do for the event. By attempting nearly every Bonus line we put ourselves out of the running, but it did however give us a good comparison to what we would be faced with in america. Push the boundries (or explore the OUTERLIMITS of your abilities) something that we do not often get the chance to do.
Biggest highlights for me was trail driving with Tracy Jordan on Friday and Tracy commenting on how well the new buggy wheeled. I was chuffed!!!
Biggest downer was when Tracy's Auto packed it in on Saturday morning. I busted my arse for more than three weeks to build one tuff rig and to have something that i had no control over break really bummed me.
It was a real shame that not many people got to see Tracy (aka "the steel horse cowboy" ) wheel that rig. Not taking anything away from the top place getters but i am sure he would have put a totally different spin on the weekend.
It was also great to see that Tracy Jordan who has been the world number one for along time is such a level headed and down to earth person and that stardom has not effected who he is and what he does, unfortunatly i can see the opposite already happening in one or two aussies.
It was also an honour to often have the chance to sit down at dinner time and talk to Bruce Zeller and George Poston. Man what a pair of funny buggers. I will hopefully be able to take you up on coming over and driving tracy's old buggy, what an honour. And George "Bruno" says hi!!!
I also must take this opportunity to Thank Mickey Thompson tyres for supporting myself and Roger. Mickey Thompson has been involved in Rockcrawling here in Australia since Day one and they are now really active in the overall growth of the sport. They have been able to see where this sport is going right from day one.
A very huge thanks should also go to Sam Overton for putting on such a great weekend. I really hope the people can appriciate what Sam has put into getting this sport growing. If there is only one thing that you as a spectator can do to help Sam and WEROCK Australia is to make sure you come to every round next year and each time bring three more people with you even if they have never seen a rockcrawling event. This event was the most spectator friendly event i have ever seen and they are only going to get better, so you MUST help support WEROCK at every event!!
Also on another note, for anyone thinking of building a buggy. Do not think that you must spend big $$$$ on rear steer to be competitive next year - heres some stats that just goes to show that expensive rear steer set-ups are not going to be the winning edge for 2006.
Werock USA Series winner - NON rear steer
Uroc USA series winner - NON Rear steer
Supercrawl 2005 winner - NON rear steer
Werock Australia series winner (if there is such a thing ) - NON rear steer
Werock Australia Finals - NON rear steer
So think about your build-ups its alot cheaper to build up a non steer rig when starting off and as history shows they are still very hard to beat.

All "competitors" there on the weekend were wonderful people and that coment is not nessesarily directed at competitors.

yeah i think so too, watching him crabwalk the final gate on stage 5 on saturday, blew me away.... although your buggie drove well (as 1st place for the aussies attests.)
although, i don't have any experience competing, this is just my opinion, but pete and his spotter need to work together more on becoming a better team. watching becca and dustin, or watching beebee and dave, or ruff and his spotter, it was obvious how much more important good teamwork is than the buggy specs. just a few times you could see that pete and his spotter didn't see eye to eye

but i see your point, and agree. spotters can make or break a team
Big congrats to Becca and Dustin, 2 of the nicest ppl i have met so far,Well done on your top effort
Haven't seen it mentioned yet but once again a huge to Rod for fixing the buggies on Thursday arvo (when we got there 3 or so were already broken from 'test' wheelin ). If we hadn't of turned up until Saturday morning, there would of been a few less competing vehicles for some time after the comp started.
Congrats to Sam for all the effort gone into WE ROCK this year

Well since evryones on the subject i might give my birds eye veiw of the weekend.
Mandy i agree with you A big to Rod because its not just his ability to fix junk its how fast he does it as well so top work mate.
The yanks all a top bunch of blokes and women and as POS said it was a shame to not see Tracey Jordan drive a top notch rig. When he drove the homeless it was not much sparkel as seeing him and the other guys playing on friday cause man he is shit hot Steering with his knees and using cuttn brakes and shiftn and the like blew me away and calm hes like ice. Adrian well you broke your shit and didnt get to b5 on sunday as i was looking forward to you coming up to that stage as im shore you would have gone the bonus as noone else did. Congrates to Tony Wes Cal And Maurice for all finishing well But Tim you da man top work mate in a bodied rig And Chris and ally top work and i told you to check the hub But you couldnt get your hand in there If you did Ally would have driven out and not timed out (and one less rig to recover)
Roll of the weekend would have to be Athol in the zook damn near pulled me down the hill in the mog as well But was a shame he left early as he was driving pretty well in a rig that size. Overall what a top weekend great to have a drink with good people and put faces to names. All competeters top work it was great to judge you all and watch you all drive
To the people who couldnt be bothered going well stand bye the bus should be on its way soon. If people dont get behind this awsome spectacle then it wont be round for long so lets get out there and support it! Sam top work mate you looked f@#$!d by sunday evening but a for pulling it all off it was awsome And a pleasure to be able to meet and judge an array of awsome drivers and spotters. Unfortunetly i may retire from the judging ranks as im keen as dog shyt to get my junk finished(at least i got something damo ) and get out there and start competing but if that fails ill allways be there to lend a hand.
The Haltech crew well boys great effort all the effort up to the weekend was worth it you guys put in so much but its never seen bye the masses But without all your work it might have been like a country hick gathering.
So next year people get behind this sport because its going to be

well done to all those who competed, i learned so much by watching how these profesional teams work, and i dont just mean the yanks.
as soon as my tuff truck is finished i will be seeing Sam and getting a frame, i just have to have a go.
