Hi EXHAUSTFIX,

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Triton 3.0L v6 and am looking at getting some more power/torque out of it for towing (actually for all facets of driving). I am generally happy with the power, but more is always better and i hate factory exhausts due to their restrictive qualities.

I am looking at fitting a unichip also to assist with the power improvement and wondering what system you would recommend for my vehicle.

I have been thinking extractors with hi flow cat (or 2nd hand commodore cat) with maybe a 2 1/2 inch pipe and straight through muffler. I have had some people suggest a twin system, but am a bit concerned that it may drone at highway speeds and not sure whether i need some backpressure with this engine or not....

any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks in advance.

hi there
with your car a set of extractors and 2.5" system will work very well
when doing the system try using twin cats one for each bank of the motor {commodore ones are fine} with the choise of mufflers be carefull they are very noisy engines

i would go to your exhaust shop ore ring a company called super cat converters to buy your mufflers they are in every state
front muffler scm8801 2,5" and a 4" round perf resonator for the rear
this combination works very well and is not to loud

Hey Ross,
Thanks for the help ages ago regarding my turbo diesel lux. Finally got the flex joint sorted out so my next question is to get rid of the crappy farty sorta noise it has. A local guy suggetsed a short truck muffler, it was about a foot long and about 20cm in diameter, otherwide he said to get a resonator off of a wrecked commodore as that would do just as well.
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

Ross,
Great work. I have GQ Patrol with Ford cleveland engine (2V heads) and would like a set of extractors- do you know if there are off the shelf ones available- if not what could I expect to pay for a custom set?
Thanks,
Josh.

instead of using one of the old type bulky hi flow cats which where all ceramic inside you can now use a full stainless steel substrate cat

the flow rate on these new cats is actually better than the old hi flow by about 20% they are 6"x3.5" x 10"long
cost it about $220

G'Day Ross,

I was just wondering roughly what a 3" Mandrel bent exhaust with no mufflers for my LWB Mav would be worth. It is currently 3" to under the front seats then the standard system from there back.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi.
Could you please tell me if there would be a big difference in preformance between a press bent and a Mandrel bent 3" exhaust on my diesel landcruiser? It is a 1Hz engine with a Safari turbo and intercooler.

Thanks

if you want all the gain from your exhaust that is possiable go for mandrel bent as press bent reduces the internal area by about %20

Again thanks for all your help

I am installing a DieselGas LPG system on my Turbo Diesel 3.0 lt Patrol. I need to remove the central Muffler to allow for the installation of a 30 lt gas tank.

I have been told that removing it presents no problems and the sound only increases slightly, is this correct? What be your recomendations

Secondly I have read through all of the posts and understand that a smaller system pipe retains good low down torque, but should I put a 2.5" or 3" dump pipe on to improve turbo spool up time and get me of the line a little quicker.(turbo lag is terrible when I'm trying to pull out into moving traffic from a side street)

Thanks for your genorosity
WITH A TURBO DIESEL IT IS different than a norm asperated
you can put a 3" dump pipe on it and get better spooling
and yes you can remove the front muffler if it is a bit loud just put a good resenator in the rear
ross
ExhaustFix thanks for you help I have done as suggested, 3" system and 3" dump pipe and I used a muffler from Vortex, I have done a write up in the Genral questions (under "GUIV Diesel Gas installed today")http://carl.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopi ... highlight=. The system also has a small rear resonator the difference is Huge and the noise is the same as factory, there doexn't seem to be any droning,

thanks again,
Dean

Hi Dr. Exhaust
i'm building a comp car running an LS1 on straight gas. using harrop heads and a dry sump setup, roughly 380KW at flywheel. i want to build my own headers and exhaust. could you suggest what diameters and lengths to aim for? also can you supply materials?
thanks a lot.
P.S. i had you build a 3" setup on my 4.2TD patrol ute about 6 months back. it is brilliant. great power. thanks.

hey chief, whats your opinion on a pressbent/or mandrel 3 inch coming off block huggers and twin 2.25 inch front pipes. ressi in rear and a 14 inch straight through lukey in the middle on a 253? too big for the low down grunt. will have stage 3 cam (maybe stage 4) and will have heads built for dual fuel.

cheers

G'day ross,

You did the exhaust on my pajero a few months back. Top work by the way, thank you.

Anyway, two things. Firstly I've just finished my EFI conversion, and I need to install an Oxygen sensor in the extractors.

Secondly, can you help with my air intake plumbing?

Thanks mate!
Mick.

HEHE just saw this thought i may aswell ask..

I got qouted the other day for a press bend 3" exhuast mild steel for $900!

Could you give me a rough quote i should be looking at for a 3" exhaust from 3" dump pipe on a SHB Maverick in mild steel and press bent.

Also could you suggest what muffler i should use if i want my car to kinda loud? I currently have a 2.5" exhaust with a single straight thru muffler but it's to quite for my liking..

Thanks alot

Rick.

hi there

i would go to a set of 1/34" headers aprox 32" long 4into 1
3"outlet
twin 3" into a x pipe and a good pair of straight through mufflers

yes i can supply it all for you

there is a big lack of low down torque here

this must feel like a tug boat at low revs

253 only need max 2.25" front pipes and 2.5" system and press bend would be ample for it

hi mate

I sen you a mesage a while back ..

I was woundering i got a price for $580 from my 3" dump pipe all the way over my diff on SHB Maverick in a 3" mandrel bend mild steel.

I think the price is the best i'm going to get but the people that are doing it haven't done a heap of my type of car and they arn't sure what muffler to use!

The engine is a Tb42 4.2L on straight gas with a t04E turbo.

I want the car to make a fair bit of noise something that i can hear etc..

My current system is 2.5" press bent mild steel with 1 straight tru muffler and it's to quite for my liking.

Is there any brand or type of muffler i could use to get that bit more of a noise but not sound like shit in the process.

Cheers

Rick.
