fitting a Pertronix to a GQ

The 425 is prone to this over time as the air valve in it is very heavy and wears the area it runs in, usually you can pull it apart and clean it up with some scotch brite, remove all scuffs etc, you can also undo the air valve from the diaphram and rotate it 180 degrees which helps.

Your converter will generally have a primary test port on the lower half, a pressure gauge in here should read about 1 1/2 to 2 psi depending on the make and springs fitted. You can get heavier springs, up to 3 psi for most converters if you have a decent local gas supplier. It will need re-tuning.

Is you rotor the origional GQ? They have a large rotor air gap, pirana make a modified one, I have in the past layed a weld across the tip being careful not to melt the plastic, and then file it to shape.

Fuel miser make a carby kit with an accelerator pump, can get it through Bursons. Check the check ball isnt stuck under the accelerator pump as this does happen and acts just the same.

There is definetly a issue with the standard rotor gap. After having problems with my TB42 at idle and getting advice on this site I took a screwdriver to the rotor and bent it up by 3mm. Did the trick as I was told it would.

does any one have a part number / supplier to order from, for the longer rotor, or a place where i can buy one in brisbane south side. where i get my parts they cant find one and a price would be good to

I think a exchange rotor is about 35, but you can buy one for 80.00 ish and them send them your old one for a refund of the difference

get one from perfromance Ignition, its worth it..There is a huge difference between the stock rotor button and theirs..makes you wonder how the stock ones work in the first place

Well, my lobe sensing ignitor arrived in the post from the US this arvo.

Started putting it in around 5pm and learnt a lot about the wiring in a dizzy and to/from the coil along the way.

Besides breaks to figure out what the fuck I was doing and dinner and drinks breaks it would of taken half an hour of a competent persons time.

All up it is piss easy requiring no machining to the shaft.


Took some photos along the way, I'll post em up soon.

I got the ignitor today. :armsup: Just wondering what everyone did for he wiring? I mean the red and the black wire that come from the censor?
Did you rewire straight to the ballist resistor and the coil or use the original wiring harness that went to the origanal pionts?

Hi Guys I've had Ignitor in my Patrol for upwards of 7 years now. No issues till very recently. Car didn't want to run under no-laod/freewheeling but would run under full load. Eventually figured out the magnetic pick-up unit was rubbing and sticking on the sperator plate that is between the points area and the rotor area. Only when the engine gets hot the thing got stuck in the full advance position. I fiddled with the installation a bit and now it is working again. Just look for the top of the pick-up or the inside of that seperator plate to see if they are rubbing.

I ran the wires straight to the coil and resistor and have kept my original wires taped up just in case of breakdown I can go back to a points setup without fussing around.

Ordered the 1762LS lobe sensing version 5 days ago for my 89SWB. Should have it within the next 2 weeks. Carl at Retro Rockets USA was very helpful.

I payed $123 AUD. I had a lot of communication with Carl about the original ignitor. He was not aware that you had to machine the dizzy at all. He was actually really surprised. He didn’t understand why there was such a big demand from Australia for the lobe sensor model.

So do the ozzy distributors actually know about the lobe sensing model yet?

I rang the Aus distributor of Pertronix the other day, (the one listed on Retro rockets website) can't remember their name, and they recommended the lobe sensor version, but would have to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive, but it was $220 trade price, I'm going for the retro rockets one aswell.

what about warranty its a long way to deal with if something goes wrong i have a crane cams one and i got it through rocket industries and its playing up and its hard enoungh dealing with warranty interstate let alone over seas

What about it............ send it back over, get a new one sent back and in the mean time keep running a points setup. Even if Retro Rockets didn't pay for the shipping back to them you would still be way infront from purchasing here.

I'm talking about the tiny Ignitor setup not your Crane situation.

From all accounts Carl at Retro Rockets is a good operator.........

Just got to organise my coil since retro would not send one out. Whats best to use other than the flame thrower?

I don't think there is any benefit by going more than a Bosch GT40 or standard.

I wish I knew about this Pertronix 4 years ago when I first bought my GQ.

The Lobe Sensor type is defenitely the go.

It absolutely fixed ALL my ignition bullshit!

Has anyone been able to find someone in Sydney to supply and fit this Pertronix at a reasonable price? seems like anyone who knows anything about the Pertronix resides in Victoria.
