Sam,

the speed at which you blokes are working is blowing me away.

I've worked on tube frame race cars before and we'd still be arguing the toss about what gauge tube to use ;)

It's looking good.
With such a low weight, it'll be interesting to see what spring rates you end up running.

Rick.

Im thinking stock Disco springs at the moment - retained both ends with 14in travel shocks all round.

It will be interesting to see what it weighs cause its so easy to keep adding steel to these things.

Heres a closer up pic of the cranked front radius arms. The chassis mounts are basically where they would be on a stock rover if they were mounted on the inside of the chassis.

Im thinking that if we can get 10in travel out of stock arms and slotted bushes then this setup should be good for 14in travel easily (if the arms were cranked till they met in the middle then they wouldnt bind at all so the closer they are mounted the less bind which gives more travel)

I just heated them up with the oxy and bent them by hand - hope they are strong enough.

Ha - I know what you mean. The way I do it is I drink the XXXX and get Ruff or Bobtail to drive my rig for me. Bloody good fun cause when I have a few beers in me I really egg them on to get into it. Im just glad that I got the sence to not drive myself.

:drinking:

What do you think it weighs now Sam? There probably isn't a lot more weight to go in is there?

Mate, it's looking good.

And weld in the steering box and hook up the shaft from the steering column and make the panhard rod mount.

Havent tried the short side axle yep - I have just ordered both axles from jac mac and will go from there.

Rear bodywork will be similar to what is on John Gillelands rig. Something like

Image

ATM it just needs the panhard mount done and the drive shafts and a bit of dodgy wiring and it will drive. Still will need springs, shocks and a radiator to drive properly. So it is fairly close and so is Christmas so it probably wont be going till after new years now.

I started to but didnt finish - I basically just got too keen to start welding. And I fairly well got my head around how the critical areas handle the stress (or dont handle it) and had a look at the frames that some of the top US comp guys are running and figgured that by the time you use tube with a decant wall thickness that wont dent too easily that it makes up for a fair bit of bad design and lack of triangulation especially where the frame will want to push sidways in a few areas.

I still should do the excercise though.

I have learnt so much just from getting this far and Im sure that when I build the next one I will optimise things a lot better so perhaps I should pull out the computer stress analysis then.
