The ELEMENT should have as much surface area as possible, but the airbox can be as small as possible while still fitting the element in, as long as it has smooth transitions.

You would be better off getting something from a 4x4 with an integral cyclone though - rather than use a car air box.

While where all on the topic of air filters,

ISUZUROVER u seem to have a interest in filtration, all our new 70series work utes (15 I think) are getting dust in the engines, nothing around the seals so its coming through the filter.

Rang toyota about the problem and they said the dust would have to be under 3micron to get through there filters and dust that small wont hurt the engine

What do u think? you can write your name in the dust on the inside of the intake pipes and air box,

You could say that mate - have worked in filter R&D for >10 years...

1st question - do you do oil analysis? What are the silica levels???

I would disagree with what toyota have told you, as would most people in filtration. particles (dust) in oil will affect the oil properties if you have enough in there - regardless of engine size. And filters AREN'T sieves, so giving a particle size (<3um) makes no sense.

If you don't do oil analysis, I would start NOW. If the silica levels end up high, I would talk to MANN+HUMMEL, DONALDSON and FLEETGUARD about what they can offer you in terms of a better filter element.

Jeep97tj - are they snorkel equipped?

Toyota snorkels have a precleaner in the top of them.

Just wondering - I've always thought Landcruiser filters were very well designed.
