Drafty wrote:Shultzy words were no painted helmets, where you draw the line at painted i dont know, arnt they all painted?
Some paints can affect the fiberglass in helmets.. Thats the reason for No painted helmets. The scrutineers have no way of telling what paint you used, or if its damaged the helmet.
Painted helmets were also a no no in road racing for years.
As someone else said, you can bog up scratches etc.. I was scrutneering at an Amaroo Park club day once when a bloke bought in a helmet that was absolutely fucked, bogged and painted up ( I remembered the BELL hemlet from race meeting week before at Oran where I picked him up in recovery truck! not many usin em at the time).. he was unhappy when I told him no way hes gettin in.

now stuck between a Rock and a Hard place.....
Got the GU almost there. Did up the back diff and cleaned out the radiator - man, so much mud came out of it... Also replaced the windscreen (cracked while setting up Alpine) - that was the one I put in for last year's challenge - fancy a screen lasting a whole year in my rig.. Got my Roll Bar done by Fabraycations in Braeside - great job.
That's about all I had to do. It will be at our Pro Comp Ramp Day this Saturday in Melb all dolled up and ready to go. I head off to Broken Hill on Tuesday.
There is some serious ponies out there this year. I 'm just a smoky old diesel going for it - should be fun but don't expect to see me on the winners podium - I'm about 150 kw short. Maybe the diesels will shine through in the mud - Hey, did you know Rob Kay (Estranged ARB Northern) was spotted setting up the mud stage - bloody hell! They say all Navigators are going to get very wet.
I am hoping some of you will be able to post updates and pics throughout the event so that those of us back in Blighty can keep up with all the fun and games.
Cheers,
Pam

Well, this is going to be my first Outback Challenge. Mine is one of 3 vehicles from the UK that shipped back in March.
Anyone that was at the 2003 challenge may remember one of our vehicles from that event - Neil Redpath's Ibex. This year we're bringing two Ibex and my 100 inch Defender.
Flying out Friday afternoon and hoping the vehicles are cleared through customs by the time we get there
It's so long since I last saw my truck I can't remember what needed finishing off !

Good to see you guys making the trip again. Looking at the web page it was a tight squeeze with the 3 in a container, but I believe they have cleared customs and are safely at Chris hummer's place.
As far as updates go, I will be calling back to The Fish who cant make it this year as, by then, he will be a proud Dad, but assures me he will post on here all updates I can get back to him.

Good on you guys, im sure there will be plenty of partners and friends eager to hear whats going on, i know my missus will be online checking out the updates.
Does anyone have photos of their trucks, it would be good to know what you are going to be in and what your rig looks like.
Joe.
To succeed, focus on the solution, not the problem.
so when u hit the water and the water rushes up ur windscreen and straight into the intake?

As I hear from Jonesy I'll post up what he tells me. Hopefully there are other competitors from here that can get info back to other O/L users so we can all keep up with what's going on!
Goodluck to all and while becoming a dad will be exciting I'll be quietly sobbing as once again I miss another OBC
Have watched those IBEX machines in Rainforest challenge vids, they dont look like such a bad thing.
what HP are they, thats the issue i see with them, it seems to be each yr, more and more neddies are required.

There's no fixed hp really as the Ibex is just a body and chassis, what you put into it to make it go is your choice and there's a lot of room there !
The two Ibex competing in the OBC are both using GM 6.2 litre V8 diesels and matching GM auto gearboxes. HP isn't something they are short of.... both engines have been blue printed and tweaked too.
cheers

Welcome ......
Great to see so many teams this year from the UK, remember Neil's Ibex well.
Pity you won't be joining your Dave Pam even to spectate, but hopefully according to Jonsey you'll be able to follow their progress via the web.
I know my sons would if they could, so I'll get them to keep a check/keep a lookout too.
Thanks Jonsey.
Safe travels to everyone look forward to see,g u in BH next week.
Cheers,

what size pipe is used and will/does it restrict air flow in to engine?
It is 2.5 inch and no it gives it more airflow than we had before. HP has increased by about 20hp. We also fitted a donaldson filter box under bonnett.
P.S; The 2004 RFC dvd has arrived in australia and I should have them in stock on monday, don't know the rrp yet but will let you know. Here is a sneak peak of the cover.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Neil and Patrick will be arriving at Melbourne airport early on Sunday morning, with Dave White, Andy Hogg and their navs Paul Everett and James Feeney. They are all travelling up to Broken Hill together and expect to be there either Thursday evening or Friday afternoon.
Thanks for the welcome Celia!
I am a tad jealous that Dave will be there without me but to be honest I would be more of a hinderance to him as I am pretty useless at navigating and a pretty poor winch monkey !! We are hoping make it over there together in a couple of years time though.
Looking forward to hearing all the news when the event gets underway.
