if they were used exclusively, they must be cheap arse filters
or they were way way OVERUSED for the quality of the fuel that you are dumping in the tank.

Someones been digging again...
Nice to see the search function being used

I agree completely, just dont forget to put the washers back on either side of the banjo fitting (sandwhich the fitting, with the washers, when you put the bolt through it)
I have one of the last of the 4.2's nissan built, and yes this filter is still present inside the pump housing. It is no harder to get to though, even with a top mount cooler and a lot of other crap all around it.

Might seem like common/uncommon sense, but last time I checked this, I replaced washers with the ...um... are they cardboard or felt or something??? Lasted about 2 weeks and all I could smell was diesel(doesn't bother me but the treasurer was pissed, "whats that bloody smell?"). So, remember to got to superbeep, and get some fangdangle copper doovers. They work a treat!
Just my 2 bob!

another quick dig....
i have a 95 gq 4.2td. and my truck is basically experiencing the same problems listed in this thread; totally gutless, wont rev etc etc.
i read throught his thread and thought bingo must be it. but alas, i also do not have this gauze filter in my injector pump either :(
does anyone have any ideas of why my truck is completely hopeless??? i have just changed air/fuel filters, blown out my fuel lines, taken the pick-up out of my tank and all seems fine. also have removed pre cleaner and have a 3" free flowing snorkel.
would hope it is just something simple before i go down the path of pulling injectors out and maybe even pulling the pump off...

did you check properly? it may be still in there, use a bit of welding wire.
if your filter is not there, the crap that should be there is prolly in your pump/injectors
also, check your muffler, it could be blocked.

nah definately not in there. fished around with a piece of wire for ages and nothing. could push the wire about 60-80mm til it touched the bottom.

Hey dave, could you post up a pic of the TPS for me??
I have an electrical fitting on my pump covered in green plastic, is that what yours looked like?
Hold on, i have a picture:
And also an extra circut on my fuel filter housing. BLOODY STRANGE!!!!!

good thread though.

Hardly pointless.
The first is a timing delay device for cold start and the extra lines on his filter housing are for heating the filter head.
again, hardly pointless.

your first post was pointless the second was informative. but i guessing the guy who asked the question in 2008 might not notice.

Bringing this thread up as I found it really informative. I went fishing for a filter last night and there is definitely not one there. No spring and my pick went right to the bottom of the pump. I can't rev over 3k and have the same symptoms as all above. Would you say pump, injectors or both are due for a rebuild?

First i would have the timing checked from someone that knows what they
are doing ! Make sure they check Plunger height! If timing is correct which
should be 0.74mm+-.02 @ Tdc and making sure there is no major
restriction on the suction side of pick up, i would be probaly look at front
seal in injector pump as these get hard and can suck air / oil from engine
side which will cause a misfire ! some times symptoms start with missfire
at low rpm when COLD as this is when seal is at its hardest and when it gets
warm seal softenes up a bit and symptom reduces or in some cases goes
away! Just a few things to check see how that goes
