The only auto's that you can push start are one with a rear pump (one that runs off output shaft) Trimatics have front pump not rear pump you need to turn the pump to get oil pressure to apply forward clutch to start vehicle pretty simple...

Hmm - I have heard the info that trimatics can be tow started from a number of sources. I'm in no position to prove either way, I was going in the information I had. Likewise with the Gwagen , but I have spoken to people who have successfully tow started their Gwagens.
Rocky8- before you argue your point any more, unless you have driven a well geared, well setup auto off road, your preference is only that. I have no idea why you "need" a 5 speed manual, I can as easily say you "need" an auto... If you have driven a good one, you'll recognise you don't "need" an auto, you just really, really want one.
I sometimes think the perception that autos are easier to drive means guys think you're not a real man if you don't drive a manual. It's OK, people said that about power steering and coil springs too. The fact is, auto's aren't any easier to drive, but for the same effort, auto's deliver a better result and add to the car's capability.

Rocky8 what makes an auto superior to a manual IMHO has nothing to do with the automatic shifting of gears. I have a fully manual - auto, it doesn't change by itself but thats only a minor detail.
Its about the torque control / multiplication provided by the converter, the ability to creep up to an obstacle, apply power and inch the wheels up or if required back off and have them come down again.
Its about instant gear changes in response to changing conditions - no loss of vehicle speed or crash changes.
Its about smooth hill starts -no three pedal shuffle and burning clutch, no cursing the handbrake that doesn't hold.
The thing that distinguishes the men from the boys ( or girls in you terms ) is who drives the hills / obstacles - and your more likely to do it in a well setup auto.

Oh - and not drowning the clutch in bog holes rivers etc isn't bad either....

Yes you can. Cruise Control is absolutely magic when you have an Auto. Not only that, i have driven my Automatic Prado offroad with an identical model with identical mods with me (except it was manual) and the ability of the Auto really showed itself i the way everything is taken. That's not even in the really hard stuff, but towards the end of the Prados ability.

I can lock my Prado in 1st or 2nd, and can prevent it going into overdrive (4th) when needed. There are plenty of other vehicles about you can do similiar with, with a standard gearbox. Which gives plenty of gear selection options in a "standard fourby" There is more to driving an automatic offroad then just sticking it in Drive.
As soon as i have other things sorted, my Sierra will be getting an Auto under it also, for all the reasons everyone has already mentioned in this thread. Go take an Auto offroad and drive it properly and your opinion will change.

Its all a bit strange to me, the more engineering mistakes I make, the better the Feroza seems to go..... I'm going to have to reconsider the front locker now - wouldn't want to further reduce its capability.

Even scary downhills. Not many stock fourbies are geared low enough that you don't have to use your brakes to stop 'em running away on steep downhills.
Properly driven, an auto will simply carp on a manual in the rough. End of story. If you doubt it, then go for a wheel with a similar vehicle and a capable driver and be prepared to eat your words.

So, from what experience do you hold this opinion? How many autos have you driven off road? What's the setup on the "ultimate" diesel manual you are advocating thats better than (any?) auto?
Yes, a manual diesel drives nicely. An auto diesel? miles better. Of course, I've owned both so I clearly don't know what I'm talking about.

Yes that's sometimes true steven101, but not always and so what ? As I see it the threads about potential - and its great that with an auto you can make them even better. A manual is just a manual.

As soon as there is something steep a manual is just as useless as an auto except with an auto you only need one foot on the brake where a manaul you need a foot on the clutch also.
Only bad thing about the auto is the repair bill if you stuff it but it is worth it.
Shane
