Slunnie, I'd be surprised if the BB was significantly heavier than a TD42.

I'd run the BB for sure, but it's going to need some careful gearing and parts choice. Really, it's going to want a 4L80E behind it to allow a sensible cruise rpm.

I wouldn't want to try and drive that offroad with a manual behind it. It's be murder on driveline IMHO.

with the big block chev my front susspensoin sits about an inch & a half higher than it ever was with the 4.2 petrol, so i dont think weight is an issue,
im running a 5 speed box on 37''s & it sits just on 2000rpm at 100klms in 5th, i drive it pretty hard on & off road & only ever broken the yoke out of the rear diff centre, one cv, one clutch & engine mounts, so the drive line seems pretty good considering i guess!!

Did realise they were that light.... or the Patrol motor was that heavy!

there are some great v8 around.bmw 8's or 12,they seem to be poping up more ,but if money no problem wouldnt mine a 8 like this under my bonnet

For my Rodeo I'd go a 5.7 LS1 for
a) Its been done before by Bruce Garland
b) Has a "small" size and weight to fit the engine bay
c) Has in the right spec, up to twice the power at the fly than the 3.2 V6.


However, If it there was a balls out option.. a current model Chev 6.2L Supercharged would get the nod :) But could you imagine the strengthening to be done for the standard Isuzu parts to cope?!?!?!?

Jaguar 4.2l DOHC 32v Supercharged v8 for me, would be nice in the engine bay of the Defender

Factory 400+ bhp @ 6000rpm
Torque 415 lbs/ft @ 3500rpm

Not bad figures for a light weight 256ci alloy v8

Unfortunately i could probably buy 2 LS motors for the same price.

300+ at the rear axle?does that equate to 124kw each wheel as its a 4wd range rover classic not 2wd?.
because its running on a 4wd dyno
if it is that rover motor is pulling not bad kws

the jaguar v8 would be 400+ rwhp or at the fly wheel
so i guess it would loose abit if was in a 4wd would it not?
is 300+hp on a 4wd dyno the same as if it was 300+ on a 2wd dyno???
seems to me both axles are pulling 300+ on the dyno
does any one know?

300 ft-lb, that's about 400Nm.
A modern turbo diesel with a little more than 2L capacity can produce that.

4wd dyno
would a 2l td put 300ft-lb to the front
and 300ft-lb to the rear on a 4wd?
or is that a 2ltd would put out 300ft-lb at the fly wheel
then it get split to four wheels giving it 75ft-lb
or maybe 30-60kw at each wheel?
thought dyno tells what putting out at wheels
would think that roverv8 was pulling
over 500+hp at fly wheel,
then 300hp/300ft-lbs at each axle,
given it 124kw / 124ft-lb at each wheel

i have a couple rover3.5v8 putting out 220+bhp

a factory 4.6 in a p38 has a top speed of 130mhp standard
that motor was stage 3 4.6lt
with merlin heads(ouch 10k nsd a pair)
a standard 4.6 has
Maximum torque
(DIN) 375.0 Nm (277 ft·lb) (38.2 kgm)
@ 3000 rpm
Maximum power
(DIN) 228.1 PS (225.0 bhp) (167.8 kW)
@ 4750 rpm
so did the dyno show 300+hp/300+ft-lb at each axle?

I doubt that 4.6 is putting out 300hp at the wheels, I think it's corrected to flywheel.

got a ute with a 302, and had a 351 in an xd, and altho i loved the 351, the tb42 turbo is just plain excitment to drive :D

thanks for working dyno out as abit puzzled on where rating was
so motor was only 80hp more than standard 4.6 rover
a few mods to a 3.5 it will pull 300hp as in
rover vitesse group c winner(84 bathurst)

80hp more is a pretty big % improvement, especially without increasing displacement.

How fast does a 300hp 3.5 have to turn to make that much power? I suspect it'd be tuned for all top end without the low end torque which you want in a 4wd.

a few i would say,but sounds good
300hp from a 3.5/ 4.6 that only weighs 155kg with oil .
power/weight not bad
suppose it how much revs you pull in your 4wd
and your gear ratio
but still think that 300hp at the wheels on 4wd dyno
what would result be on a 4wd dyno with a toyota??

Since we're being silly now, I sometimes wonder about putting a bmw v12 into a P38 HSE. The HSE has the same auto (4HP24) as an 850i/750i etc.

Apparently the BMW V12 is actually surprisingly close in size and weight to a Rover V8 as well. 240kW, 500Nm... not bad. Probably sounds nice too.

Of course it is just a bolt-in swap in my little dream world.
