I broke more CVs in my hilux in the first 6 months of owning it without a locker than i did for the first 6months after the lockers went in. I found that i would end up with one wheel in the air spinning and when it came down it usually broke a CV.

ASCC Townsville 2004 round three
The third and final round for the Townsville competition was postponed for a week due to the Oktoberfest booking out all the portable dunny's in the area so the number of Brisbane competitors was down as well as spectators.
We flew in about midnight on Friday then picked up the ute and drove out to Talbot park and after the usual greetings with those who had arrived earlier we finally crawled into our swags about 3.00am and were awake again around 5.30am.
We started to get the trucks ready and some of us had to vote and also help out getting the tracks and the park ready and finally at the allotted time we were all set to go and chose our starting order by picking a card ... we were pretty lucky and picked number four position out of the eight modified competitors.
TRACK ONE
We started of by driving across a gully then into a "V" shaped one metre deep washout that managed to swallow a few competitors but chris kept me straddled across it and we cleared it easily.
We then turned sharp right and climbed the rise towards the rock ledge and when we hit it the truck bounced backwards and we had to reverse down for another go.
We headed up with a bit more momentum and bounced the front wheels up and over then powered up on to the plateau.
After crossing the plateau we had to stop for ten seconds with the front wheels poised at the very edge of the drop off for ten seconds, this was meant to disorient us with where we were about to drive but as i can't see over the bonnet most times anyway it didn't have any effect on us.
We started over the edge and slowly bounced our way down the slope at a side angle until we dropped into the gully and slammed the bullbar into the sharp vee at the bottom.
I kept the power on and pushed the front up the other side and turned sharp right into the gully with the front left wheel climbing high up the bank and the front right hanging in mid air, i reversed back breaking the tail light as the tray dug into the bank.
We drove up the gully then had to scale the bank and while the rear wheels were still climbing turn sharp right to avoid hitting a tree but making the truck crab sideways a little before gaining traction and climbing the rest of the way up the bank.
We drove along the bank a bit then reversed back to line up for the climb up a steep bank with a rock ridge in the middle of it.
We popped the front wheels up the step at the bottom then started to power up but got hung up when the diffs grounded on the ridge.
We turned to the right putting us on a side angle and clawed our way to the finish.
We came in second on this track.
TRACK TWO
I had a passenger for this track and after sourcing another helmet and strapping her in we were under way.
The start was at the base of a steep bank and we powered up easily but the left turn at the top was blocked by a tree so we had to go further forward and reverse back into line.
We made our turn and snuck past between the tree and the edge of the cliff then dropped over the bank on the other side and down into the gully.
From the gully we had to climb up the bank then come to a stop just below a rocky outcrop then try and get moving again on the loose powdery surface, we managed to get enough momentum up to bounce our way over the rock ledge but slammed down pretty hard on the chassis as it went over.
We made a three point turn and dropped back over the bank beside where we had came up then dodged the marker at the bottom while the left wheels came up and over the huge rock on the inside of the left turn.
We scraped and bounced our way around the corner and took out the marker in the middle then bounded up the end of the gorge wall to the exit.
We came first on this track.
THE GORGE
As usual the track was held under lights but this time all the judges were to vote on who made the cleanest run through the gorge with only one winner to be announced.
I had Mandy as a passenger for this track.
The production guys went first and it was a relief to finally get under way after towing a couple of competitors out .
We drove over some "wombat holes" then dropped over a cut out vertical bank into the gorge and turned sharp left but had to have a couple of goes to make the sharp "U" turn and line up for the climb out of CV hill.
We drove the left wheel up the bank throwing us onto a bad side angle but that allowed the bullbar to clear the hill and we turned back across the hill to straighten up and powered up and over.
We next dropped back into the gorge on an angle and lined up on the logs incurring a bit of a scrape as we dropped off the end of them.
We drove through some muddy water with a large rock slab to get over then lined up for Les's wall.
This wall was only conquered be Les on the last round but appeared to have some more dirt at the bottom to ease the entry.
We idled up the gorge to the bottom and turned hard left onto the wall and as i started to quickly turn to straighten up i didn't get time to hit the locker switch and gently powered up the wall backing off as i got near the top of the 6 metre wall and turning hard right to head over the bank between the markers.
Everyone else had made a three point turn on top of the wall but as i gently inched over on an increasingly bad angle i was thinking i should have done the same.
Mandy wasn't saying much as the angle got steeper and steeper and i could see we were going over but kept inching toward the tip over point then powered down and around to level out successfully.
We crossed the floor of the gorge and bounced up the double stepped bank on the other side and had to make a three point turn then drop over the edge of a cut out double step track to the bottom of the gorge again.
We had to line up and drive along a log before clearing a rocky hole and continuing out of the gorge to the finish.
We were the winners on this track.
TRACK THREE
On Sunday morning we lined up first for track three and started by driving down a steep gully trying to dodge the markers but I'm pretty sure we hit them all on the way down.
We started up the creek bed taking out more markers as we tried to climb the bank to the side of them and turned a sharp bend then lined up to drive along a large log.
After the log we approached some large flat boulders and managed to drive over the first one but got stuck on the others, we reversed back a bit and chris rock stacked then we turned right and drove over the rest of them and continued up the creek to a very sharp corner where we had to do a three point turn to try and miss the marker but once again we took it out.
The climb out was a doozy but we powered up with a bit of torque lift of the left front wheel and continued up the climb to exit over a rock ledge.
We came second on this track.
VERTICAL ASSAULT
I drove to the bottom of the dug out hill and found that my front wheels were still half a metre away from the climb when the bullbar hit the bank.
The climb had a vertical section about a car length high with a ninety degree angle at the bottom and top of the climb.
I decided to go first as no one seemed to want to start so i drove the front right wheel up the bank before the climb to get the bullbar to clear, i maneuvered the truck to the wall and tried to drive up but the chassis just slammed into the top lip of the climb.
I reversed back and tried with more power but had the same result and after a few more goes i had to give up.
Luke gave it a few good goes in his GQ ute and had the rear wheels hanging in mid air but could not make it.
Fester tried a couple of times in his 80 series ute but the motor started to run on engine oil he had to shut it down and get towed out, he wouldn't let any of the patrols tow him out but waited until Jake drove down in his middy!!
Matt had several goes and finally got it by doing a wheelstand and slamming the chassis so hard into the bank that it flung itself up... awesome!
i managed to bend up my flimsy side steps but matt managed to bend a set of Superior Sliders ... that's a very very hard thing to do.
Once again we had a fantastic weekend of fun with the friendly folk in Townsville.

Thanks for the reply Shane. To bad the crowd wasn't any better for the weekend but those that came had a good time. I was a bit dissapointed with my first time performance I think I need to modify my production car a bit more plus being second on the gourge wasn't much fun their's a lot you can do and still be production,eg. crawler gears rock sliders underbody protection etc...
maybe next time
