Issue with 2.8d performance (no not the usual issue)

Post by billux »

So yer i have a 92 2.8d dual cab lux and it runs fine when its going, but the thing is an absolute pos to get going. Its okay if its on a flat bit of road, but if i have to start off on a decent incline i have to rev the nuts off it and ride the clutch to get it going. And this is without a load, if it had a load id have to go low range.

A good example of why this is shit, is if im backing a trailer in up my pretty steep driveway i have to go low range due its assness.

Are there any obvious reasons why it would be doing this? The only thing i can think of are the 31.5" tyres, but i wouldnt have thought this would cause any grief

:-P

Have you changed the fuel filter recently?

How many kms on the clock?

Have you had the pump and injectors serviced?

Is it getting full throttle, ie the lever on the pump touching the stopper bolt.?

Tyres can knock power around, swap to some less aggressive smaller diameter tyres and see what happens.

Was i like this before you had work done?

I have 31's on mine and I have no dramas with them, personally I don't think that its the tryes. If they were 33's then it would be different.

Some thing random could it be the clutch if it's doing a heap of reving and not going anywhere it's a good chance thats it but if clutch is fine i'd be thinking you've got a bad batch of deisel and would be doing the filter

its been like this ever since i owned it, which is over a year, so yer it did it before i had the injectors done, and its not a bad batch of fuel again for the same reason

ive always wondered if it was a clutch issue but it doesn't slip at all so i sort of ruled that out, but you never know

i haven't checked if its getting full throttle, but as it was tuned when the injectors were done i'd expect this would be fine, ill check it out though, i do drive around with it at full throttle most of the time so i hope im getting as much as i can out of it ;-P

check it getting full throttle.

is it blowing any smoke?

if not then try adjusting the max fuel up untill it smokes at full throttle.

also what the fuel useage like?
if its not that good i wonder if its slipped a tooth on the timing belt.

If you've had it for over a year did it get progressivly worse? The tyres wouldn't make you have to go low range to reverse a trailer. If it's your clutch is it slipping? There can only be a few reasons why a diesel is down on power, fuel, compression, or air. Check your air filter and see if there's a blockage in the air's path, check if you have the right fuel pressure. And then compression test it. Start cheap work your way up to the costly testing. Or you could stop being a tightarse get a mech/diesel mech to look at it.

hmm

yer it is blowing a bit of smoke, but not overly, getting the injectors done fixed this.

it hasnt got progressively worse, its just always been crap like this

its only underpowered at take off, its fine at other times

the mechanics didnt fix the issue thats why im asking here! ill just tell em to try harder next service i guess, maybe get em to check the clutch

Considering you can run 35's on a 2.8 and have no drastic (to your extent) power problems, 31's are are no probs, yeh, in this case i would just give it to a diesel mech, if you have checked all that you say you've checked, get it to a work shop m8, you dont wanna keep on driving it just incase it might escalate problems on you... my 2c, hope all goes well m8

I have come across some engines that have had simmilar issues when the cam jumped a tooth.

On the old VL 6cyl coms we used to advance the cam timing 1 tooth, and mod the dizzy to enable base idle timing to give them alot more go low down.

Im not sure if one tooth out will bend valves with the lux.
however if you have checked these things before, and the pump has been done, I would assume it was set up correctly and ok.

The govenor should prevent stalling when letting the clutch off slowly in 1st gear.

what did the diesel shop say about it when the pump/ injects were done??

I have found that little or no back pressure can affect the early take off from idle up to 1200rpm from either extractors, and or a leak in the exhaust.
When I patched up the flexi joint in mine, it gave back the low down rpm torque that it had lost before.

by what you describe, it sounds like the problem could be something else, but I thought I would offer some of my findings with simmilar probs.

Fuel filter should be changed every 10,000kms- so id say its pretty blocked up- esp if you've just run a biodiesel thru it.

hmm

the injectors were screwed, the pump was fine so he redid the injectors and tuned it all up, he didn't mention the poor low down performance

one thing that you mentioned was the flex joint, mine does make a weird noise when i get to a certain rpm, the mechanic said its stuffed, maybe its causing some issues.

i just picked up some extractors off ebay and was going to get that fixed up when i go to the exhaust place, maybe that'll help

ill swap out the fuel filter as well as a check

What are the chances with the previous owner stuffing with the gearbox/diff ratios?

not very likely, he didnt maintain anything at all, and it was in std trim except for a set of sunraysia's

ill just hit up the diesel guys at next service and tell em to fix it!
