Changing steering components from Disco to Defender?

G'day guys,
Just wondering if there's any benefit to this? I had heard the Defender gear is more out of the way, or is this just for the steering damper?
Looking at getting an AMV guard as I wiped out the standard front overrider bar on a rock and nearly took out the oil cooler.........
But the AMV guards differ for Disco to Defender so I thought I'd get the right steering components first......
