uh oh, no brakes!

well hello all. last night i was heading home from work, and pulled into a servo. afterwards when i went to drive off i noticed the BRAKE dash light was on, and the pedal is totally stiff. now, i dont have a manual so i cant read what that light signifies, so i was hoping one of you lads might be able to help me out, as far as i figure, maybe a blockage in the line?? or the booster crapped itself?

its a 84 diesel 4runner.

Pump the brake pedal about half a dozen times with engine off, hold pedal in and start engine. The pedal should drop slightly as vacuum takes effect. If not then you have lost the vacuum assist.

and the vacuum assist is what exactly? it has something to do with the hose leading from the back of the alternater to the small cyl...which then goes into the booster?

Vacum assist used engine vacum (or in diesels case alternator mounted vacum pump) to assist your pedal effort. If this has failed you pedal will feel very hard, and you wont stop well at all :D. With your motor running check that you have vacum at the line that attaches to the booster. if no vacum check if there is any at the vacum pump fitting. If there is vacum at the booster, you will most likley have internal problems.

checked it out, no vacuum at booster, and no vacuum at the pump fitting. so im guessing i need a new pump right?

Yeah one would say so don't know if you can buy then new/reco you would think you could best bet call around :idea: best of luck

speak to an auto electrician. They often have old units lying around still attached to old alternators that they have replaced. I picked up a 60 series one this way that works perfectly.
