Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Morning all,

I have just picked up a '93 4Runner in exceptional condition. Now here

comes my request. It had done a little beach driving, and even though

the previous owner was very pedantic about the cleaning, a few bolts and

nuts under the car have a slight salt corrosion to them. Is there a product

that I can get that I can spray all under the car, so that I need not worry

about the corrosion going further. It is not all over the car by all means,

just a slight white surface on some metal parts. I was thinking something

like a pump pack of Lanotec, or similar. thanks for the help.

lanotex is great for a top up over painted underbody but if you get a spray pay of penetrol and hit all the rusty bits then get some black underbody paint and touch up where you did the penetrol (penetrol is clear)

I use Staun Salt Assualt.. it claims to clean and protect surfaces. You could give that a go. I like it so far.

Go to your local hardware and look for some products (in painting area sometimes) that nuturalise rust. One example is rust-buster I think? Anyway allot of them contain some form of acid, and when applied to the rusted area it sends it black, preventing further corrosion.

Used isome on a Rover Rancher about 6 years ago and it still hasn't fallen to bits. Recently bought some for Dad's lux he's re-building, I think it was about $15 for 500mL.

I'm all for lanotec after this has been done.

penetrol penetrates ,treats and primes all in one we use buckets of the stuff.

Get some rust converter (mostly phosphoric acid) to get rid of the rust that is there. Wash that off and let it dry, then paint over any bare metal with cold gal (at least 97%zinc), then a top coat if you wish.

Then - spray the whole truck - especially in the door and body cavities - with either fish oil or lanotec.

Another for Penetrol here, followed up with some sound deadener.

Does Penetrol wash off, or it it water proof once applied? Is it some thing I can put on, and then not paint over, or do I have to cover it in something?

no it does not wash off.

Thanks dirtyGQ, I will probably just go nuts with Penetrol, and see what happens.

Penetrol is good - it seals the rust but for long term use, especially if its exposed to sunlight it should have paint applied over the top. Any reasonable enamel in a spray can will do the job.
I'd advise against tars, waxes, lanolin, fishoil etc on the underbody as sand and dirt will stick to it and if/when you go to sell it buyers will assume its done a lot of beach work.
I use Penetrol and (black) paint on the underbody and load up the internal cavities with fishoil, tectly 506 or lanolin, sometimes a mixture of all three.......

Sorry to bring this up again, but Penetrol does not actually neutralise the rust does it? It appears on its website that it just thins paint and helps it bond better. So i guess i have to get rid of the rust, convert what is left, then Penetrol it, then paint it. Is this correct?

yes penetrol rust agent eats into the rust and seals it,i will bring home the info tommorow and post it here.

We use that penetrol at work(painter), They might be refering to a different penetrol for rust

we use the penetrol for paint too,and also the penetrol for rust .

Thats right - Penetrol seals rust but does not convert it chemically.

if it is rusted

acid it (rust converter etc etc)

then hit it with cold gal, and then hit it with black

cold gal is by far the best anti rust protectant you can use.

Penetrol is great for getting into tight spaces as, just like fish oil based products, it penetrates extremely efficiently, cold gal wont penetrate far at all.

good stuff eh ! well i use ESP as well at work and it is good also.Back to the subject if you want to spend a little more and really protect your underbody dulux durebild ste 2 pack is very good ,even goes over light rust and has a built in rust converter (btw i need to do all my underbody )

penetrol is very clearly labelled as an anti rust thingomojig
