Off to fraser, and a question bout lockers?

heyas,

im hoping this isnt a re - post of sorts, but i have a quick question about lockers, since my current 4wd (jtop pajero) has front and rear difflocks (front arb airlocker, centre difflock of course and rear factory locker).

i havent done much 4wding since ive had this car, but i did enough to already bust a front CV. Coming from a family of landcruisers and previously owning two patrols, i see the weakness of IFS now :( though this car is a temp daily drive til my supra gets back from its melbourne incident with a BMW driver that failed to give way *sigh*, so the comfy and street like drive of the IFS is sweet.

my question is mainly about the use of lockers, and sand i suppose.

Ive never had a prob on fraser before in anything from current model pajero's and current model GU patrols, so i dont think my 'modified' NH pajero should have a prob, but since it has front and rear lockers, is there really much point on sand at all?

ive only experienced the front lockers ability so far to make steering next to impossible heh, and the rear locker, well i guess on sand u might as well have it on all the time?

thats my guess anyways.

i suppose im wondering in the case of difficult beach and deep sand (where ive learned momentum is pretty important), am i best of using rear lock, centre diff lock and leave the front open to allow for steering control in case of change of direction?

what are peoples experience with sand and lockers etc?

ive pretty much steered clear of using my front locker for fear of busting cvs. Nothing quite looks so strong under a pajero compared to the old GQ or my folks 100 series :S looks more like my road cars hehe.

either way, hoping to head off today (managed to break a front CV boot last night with a it of debris that got stuck under car grrr - so need to fix that first).

thanks for tips :)

mate nothing wrong with the paj on sand i am positive you won't bust a cv. but with that said don't use the front locker it won't do much except make steering bad, just air down to 16-18 psi depending on your load.

Leave it unlocked except for tough stuff. When you get bogged, lock your diffs in :D
Even the rear locked may tend to dig in a little.

These might help you out also...

Keep centre it at all times.

Use rear when approaching really soft or rutted sections.

Mate, ide lock the centre for any soft tracks, leave it in for inskip and hook point but once you get on the hard sand (low tide beach) ide unlock the centre as it may still bind up the transfer case a bit on the hard stuff. i wouldnt lock the F & R unless the paj starts to give into gravity, ide stop, lock the F & R and try reverse out dont dig all 4 corners down, then unlock again and hit it harder.

Sometimes it sucks to snatch / dig your way out of a bog with 2 corners down, it really really sucks tryin to snatch / dig with all 4 corners down.

but if you air down to 16-18, and attack stuff in the right gear you wont need your lockers. Have fun you lucky bugger. :P

my 2c worth, not saying its right but its what i have learnt.
