gears crunch

I recently bought a TDI discovery. In low range the gears crunch slightly if changed too quick (ie like driving normal in high range). The guy i bought it off said its normal for landrovers. Is this true? High range is fine. So i have to change gears slowly, sometimes even double clutch

yeah maybe i know mine just sort of snig in with a slght noise but its lt95 you would expect it. maybe just take it a bit easyer in low no need to shift it hard

LR 5-speed and LT95 boxes need to be changed relatively slowly as the synchros seem to need some time to work. That said - they are not that bad and yours may have the wrong oil. The best oil to use is a light gear oil, like castrol VMX-80 or better still syntrans. Change to one of these and see if it helps.
In short - if it crunches either you are changing too quickly or have the wrong oil.

R380 does this in low range, regardless of fluid used. Just have to be a bit more careful.

So it is a common problem. Its hard to change slow when u are doin a steep hill climb and need to change gear

otherwise i change slowly. Ill try the oil. Thanks.

Try and pick a gear you can hold all the way up - e.g. 2nd low. Only driving on sand dunes have I even needed to change quickly. But I have never had the crunching problem with the LT85 (only when cold).

my lt95 just snigs in no real noise but you feel it throu the stick . i would recon the 5 speeds would have to be better . but how bad is the crunch is it like a crunch or is it just a slight noise or a bit notchy in the shift? remember when your giveing it a heap of stick in low range the gears in the main box are spining alot faster then in high for the same rpm and you cant expect it to be as slick

It just catches when changing, not an actual crunch. This is the first 4WD i have experienced this.
