exhaust issues

Hi guys

I have a toyota hilux SR5 3lt turbo diesel with lots of extras
The main problem i am having is fuel consumption especially when i tow my camper trailer.

I have been advised to replace the entire exhaust system. Basically from the turbo back. This also includes the gasket on the turbo. The stock gasket is only 50% open and the exhaust guys want to replace it with one that is fully open and then put a 3 inch dump pipe and 3 inch system all the way back with one straight thru muffler.

Has any one done this and if so did you think it was worth the money. It will cost me about a grand to complete.
What sort of power / economy gains did people get.

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks

Phil

I think you will find nearly everyone will agree that the best and first mod you can do on a turbo diesel is open up the exhaust.

the only issue people will debate on is mandrel bent or otherwise......

Shop around for the best price, but the exhaust mod will make a BIG difference as long as it is done properly.

Thanks guys.

Having been talking to some other exhaust fitters and another speciallist stated that he would not touch the dump pipe or the gasket on the turbo. just put a 3 inch system off the dump. He stated that you loose power and torque if you change the dump and gasket.

Both exhaust fitters speciallize in turbo systems and sports systems.
Who do i believe, do i change the dump pipe and the gasket or not.

I need help.
Any one had any experience with this.

Phil, (I assume it is phil), don't talk to an exhaust fitter, talk to a diesel mechanic.

Anyone can be an exhaust fitter, say that they are great, (they might be on normally petrol engine vehicles) do the best job etc. speak to a diesel mechanic, that does dyno work, they would be the best bet.

I really can't see how opening up the exhaust on a diesel would loose torque, as the quicker you spin up the turbo, the quicker it will make good power.

What is the gasket you are talking about removing? can you show us pictures of it?

Don't it mater what you have after the turbo as the turbo has resistance/backpresure hence why most big turbo stuff has a short but big pipe to get the flow st howi'v allways taken it +mae has turbo 2.8 with turbo and about meter long pipe and it hammers ( not sre of boost yet but around 9psi ) open to debat tho

Thanks guys

I am going to fit the new flange, dump pipe and 3 inch system

Spoke to my mechanic and he recommended the system and he also highly recommonded the exhaust fitter that i am going to go with.

the system will go on in about 3 weeks time.

Thanks

Phil
