The Mitsubishi 4M engine is a range of four cylinder diesel engines from Mitsubishi Motors, first introduced in the third generation of their Montero/Pajero/Shogun SUVs. They superseded the previous 4D56 engine family, although they did not replace them.

Originally available only as a 2.8 L intercooled turbo, detail improvements in 1996 and a larger 3.2 L option in 1999 served to improve power, torque, fuel economy and emissions.

Compression ratio — 21:1
Power — 92 kW (125 PS) @ 4000 rpm

I'm guessing they've "merged" some 4M41 (DiD) details into their 4M40 article - it sounds like the DiD pump to me.

It was an upgrade that we never got. The UK forum talks about them and other over sea's sites list a power chip for the 2.8.

Yes that's right there certainly was a 4M40 with electronic injection available in other markets.
I'm pretty sure it was only for Triton's though but I maybe wrong.
It seems they tend to market the 4D56 with electronic control much more though and I think the above motor has been dropped because of this.
The 4M41 is nothing to do with these two motors except that the 4D56 now has common rail injection in other markets.

It also applied to the Japanease domestic market that we get as used imports, a friend has a flared guard model (NL) with a full front mount and alot of engine work done, and the pump is electronic. Can't just adjust the fuel screw or whatnot.
It is a neat machine, 2.8 diesel 5 speed shorty on 33's with twin lockers & 4.9 diff conversion.
