got a problem sourcing a replacement/new alternator for my 3.5l 84' rangie, been quoted up around $400 for a replacement, not wanting to spend that much, have heard you can use a 85 amp au one, however cos the taco input feeds off the alternator and I want to keep the taco going, any ideas or prev experience, cant seem to find any recod lucas aletrnators either???

mounts via 3 points, however its not so much the mounts i am worried about as can always manufacture something its the taco and also pully on it, most dont seem to have the v shaped belts which standard lucas's do, do you know if the taco can run of a ford alternator

What side of the engine is the alternator?
If left a TN Magna 85 amp will fit. One cost me $200 a couple of years ago.
See the recent thread on AULRO forum.
The tacho just needs a field wire added, cost $40.
If RHS I think an old Falcon one XB? fits.
But I think they only come in max 60amp.

if your standing at the front of the car and facing the engine its on the right hand side,

The tacho feed is a 7v ripple. It's simply half of the wave that feeds into the rectifier.
So if you can break into the wires before the regulator/rectifier, just tap into that through a diode. That'll give you the same 7v ripple.

i looked at a v6 commie alt at work and they look to mount the same as my rangie one and are internal regulated. only down fall is the pully but i think i can change that or just make one

Have also heard about people using commo alternates.
Spose i could be asking a dumb question here but why cant the pully be swaped / changed whatever from a serpintine to a v pully?
I have a spare alternater from a 89/90 injected 3.5 that mounts on the passenger side of the motor. Is this able to be used in the above problem?

99% of alternator pulleys swap directly from one to another in my experience. You just need a rattle gun to get the nut off.
Anyway if AU alternators fit then EA alternators should fit, these have a vee belt pulley and definitely come in 85A. Have a look at my custom falcon alternator install on a G60 motor in the auto elec section.

Commodore up to VL, and you can chenge the VL flat belt to a vee if you want - easy fit and cheeep.
Forget about the tacho, just rev it till it won't rev anymore!

Come to think of it on the old homeless buggy when we swaped the engines from a 3.5 to a 3.9 i am pretty shore we put a serpentine pully on to the commo alternater which had a v pully. I may be a little vague in the memory but pretty shore thats what we did

in trying to fix the original alterator did get the pulley of with some persuasion, until the hammer came out to tackle the rest so, yeah suppose not worried about actual pully
