Hi all i swapped my 5L engine in my 1998 hilux for a 1KZTE. When ceruising along it seems to rev out at 3500 to 4000 rpm and it wont pull very well in 4th and 5th gear i can only get a max 100 maybe 110 kms out of it and that is at about at 2500rpm in 5th gear. What do other people get from their turbo diesel 1kzte cars. Can somebody help me.

Somewhere around the 8-10psi standard depending on what size exhaust you have fitted. (These figures are obviously under load, try 3rd gear, up a bit of an incline).

Did you just swap the long engine over or the whole engine and wiring loom and ecu?
Are you getting full throttle, fuel lines plumbed up correctly?
The list can go on. But start with basics.

I never got any more than 4000rpm out of mine either. They arnt that strong a motor up top but normal cruising around 120 - 130km should be out of the question. The fastest mine ever went was 140 and that was after a loooooong straight.
My auto cruised at about 2300rpm at 110km/h.

from the ones I have driven, they seem to top out at about 140-145, I've got a stocker auto 2LTE surf, only mods are no egr and free wheeling hubs and it easily gets to 120 and on a long straight it managed 145, but at 110 it does 2950rpm, it doesn't go too bad for a lump of a car with a 2.4 diesel auto, I had the same motor in a manual 82 dual cab with a big exhaust and 4.88 gears and it easily would go past the speedo end of 140 but not a safe as the surf and it was a 4 speed so it was revving out past 4200

Does a 1KZTE has a butterfly

If you mean throttle butterfly then yes they do.

no they dont- they have a valve in the throttle body to shut the air flow down to assist in a smooth shut down, but theres no butterfly in there to regulate power output (1- it would screw the engine up, diesels take full gulps of air and vary the fuel level to regulate torque, not like a petrol which starves air)
The later fly by wire 1KZ-TE's have got an electric throttle position sensor on the intake body instead of the cable like the early ones did.
Just on an aside, im considering this swap with a LN106 to replace my 2.8D, what kind of work needed doing and how much did it set you back if you dont mind me asking

hi ferrit thanks. I found a crashed 01 model with the 1kzte engine in it for 4500 and i have probably spent about a 1000 more just on things i had to move the engine mounts and the centre bearing didnt line up so i had to get that shortened. But i swapped everything from the donor car engine gearbox ecu and complete wiring loom.

So far ive been quoted $7700 for a 1KZ-TE from a lux with ecu and loom, and another $2500 for the gearbox!!!
Shoulda bought that 2000 prado TD i saw on ebay in sydney for $9500
