Anybody running a front LSD in their rig?

Post by PHIL »

This is getting to be a bit of a trick in N.America - swapping in an LSD on the front axle. Anyone done it down there, and how did it affect your rig's handling?

I am currently in negotiations to get one for my gutless beast, and was just wondering what I'm getting myself into... :D

Phil, I don't know anyone who has done the swap your talking about with the V6. I've heard of some welding up their front diffs and a few rally versions with a front lsd but no-one was sharing any imfo. I suspect the secrets out now with the Starion lsd but some in the know (mainly with factory backing) were doing it.
I do know of some Toyo dudes who have installed a front lsd and they said it wasn't worth it but thats mainly because Toyo lsd's are crap anyway.
I think Little Joe off Trail Talk has one in the front of his Toyo ?? I recall him saying it made it very twitchy offroad.

Frank, What do you mean about the secret's out about the Starion LSD?
I've heard lot's of "rumours" that a starion LSD will fit the front of a Paj, but no-one really seems to know!

In the US it has been found that the 87-89 Innercooled starion diffs are a bolt on for the front of a V6 front and the early 83-85? will bolt in with a ring gear spacer.

It fits. I've been running it in mine since November of 04, and it works awesome. Mine came from an 88 Starion. With regular gear oil, it can chirp the tires on a tight turn on pavement with the hubs locked.

And in snow the thing literally claws up hills.

But its not the ticket for highway-4x4ing in the snow, if that's your thing.

Mine fit in just like the stock unit, with the spacers in the exact same place. It was a boltup.
