G'day i was wondering if anyone has ever thought about putting a lj50 x-fer into a sierra?, Lj50 x-fer has a 3.1...:1 low range ratio and a 2.7?:1, which is 10% lower in both high and low range than a 1 litre x-fer.
if anyone has any pics i would like to have a look at one. Plus i know where i can get one if it will work.

Aren't LJ diffs centred? Meaning that the outputs are not aligned with sierra?

I have one in the shed. Not a very good candidate for a swap into a sierra.

LJ transfers are quite differently arranged as the diffs are centred. the input and the output are immediately above each other. Getting one to even fit would be a fair challenge.

Add to this tiny flanges, very small oil capacity (they run hot with more than, say, 19kw going through them), poor parts availability, wierd shifter position, tiny front drive engagement gear....

Lets say you could get a case maybe $50. By the time you sorted all the flanges etc out, made the mounts and actually got it in a car, A) you'd better hope it doesn't break, because it woudl a PITA to put your old case back and B) you still only have 3:1

I would keep an eye out for a series 1 RH, in a case. these occasionally pop up for the $500 mark.

PS on another lj50 related note, 50 diff centres will go into 1.0 axles. This drops you from 4.1 to 4.8:1- a 20% reduction, and would correct the car on road for about a 32" tyre. Finding a good set though can be a challenge.
