Nice idea, mightn't work on an open diff, can't see why it wouldn't work but i'm sure you could make yourself one for an incredibly smaller amount of $$
But you get 2 of them in the kit. One for each side.
When the spinning wheel makes the rope taught, it should load that wheel up and you be able to drive out. Then I suppose they would both reel in at roughly the same speed.
You prolly could make one yourself, but I wouldn't use anything you made.
Good idea in theory... be nice to see them in action.

Setting 1 ground anchor is a pain in the butt....imagine the hassle of trying get 2 good digs on a ground anchor at the same time. In theory you would need at least 3 people to operate this thing.
A real pain in the butt I think!

What happens if all your wheels are buried in mud?

You wouldn't want to try to steer while winching with em from the back wheels, you'd probably run over the rope?

be a good backup plan i spose.
for 100 bucs or sumfin tho. not 800 you can buy a second winch for that or an awesome handwinch
ps if it was fitted to a zook it wouldnt be anywhere near as powerful as an ebay winch

It'd be right when you wanted to use it that you'd realise that those big-arse rocks on the last track you drove have stoved your protuding 'winch' in so far they're more useless than when you bought them.
Good for fishing. If your able to pull a marlin from a boat launching ramp
And for $800, why buy an overpriced handline when you can get a rod and reel cheaper? A $600 slomount would be heaps more user friendly.

A mate of mine invested $60k into patents and testing on these things. His were a steel baseplate and thermoplastic drum. As far as I'm aware, my mate still holds the worldwide patent. He was looking to market them for around the $300 mark but no-one in Oz wanted to deal with it. His also used a single ground anchor with a spreader bar. Having seen these things work extremely well with a Bronco bogged to the chassis at Robe, I was hoping for a freeby set...

Austin Gypsies had a turned front hub flange that looked like a small capstan drum. The theory was you could use them to extract yourself.
If it was the rubber band suspension model it would have had a lot of use as they crossed up on 2 diagonal placed 4x2s

I saw this type of recovery device advertised in a US mag going
back to the late 70's. It's not a new idea, Its not even a good idea!
Thats why the most popular winching solution in the US today
is the electric winch.....go figure

A Backup plan is jamming a bar through a hole in the rim so that it locks and jams the spinning wheel against something to send drive to the other wheel.
Between the walk and the stuffed shock absorber it was the better option.
