Folks,

I have always serviced my diesel Toyotas with genuine filters.

I was talking to a Repco employee today who tells me that Ryco filters are fully OE spec, and therefore as good as genuine Toyota filters (air, oil and fuel).

What is the opinion of the collective? Do you get what you pay for, or are Ryco really as good as genuine filters?

I believe that Ryco are one of the better aftermarket filters, but genuine is usually best. That said i use Rycos in my vehicles with no problems.

ryco are probably as good, especially for older vehicles, but have you checked the price of OEM filters?

For my HJ60 it is cheaper for OEM filters than ryco, some $10 cheaper.

This is pretty embarrassing to admit considering i'm a mechanic, but nah i have checked the price on any genuine filters on my 60! I usually use all genuine stuff when i service something like a 100, and whack Ryco or similiar on the old girls.

Ryco released some material a while back to their distrubutors that stated that their entire range of filters reach and or exceed the quality levels of OEM filters. They included a statement that the use of Ryco filters on new vehicles would in no way compromise new vehicle warranty. I had the flier a while back but dont know what happened to it. It probably states something along those lines on their website. But I do agree, in some cases OEM filters can be cheaper than Ryco. Best to check before you buy.

On a multi fitment filter, whose OEM spec does it exceed?

meh i use cheapies and change them often, genuine long life coolant though

Yeah a Z9 about as common as a poo shute in humans that why there so cheap but yeah i like ryco and heard all that stuff about the quality i'm sure it even says it on the box little silver bit only on the newer boxes (i think?)
even the repco filter are made to that standard but i'd rather go the trusted brand

I have cut open a Repco filter, Wesfill/Cooper filter, and an ACDelco filter.
The repco filter had very little media in it, the wesfill not much more. The Delco filter had plenty of paper, the full depth of the canister.
It sure did make it easy for me selling Delco filters, walk into a customers shop with the 3 samples. All 3 filters are similarly priced.

Yeah Im using AC Delco on my Lux at the moment and it seems good.
But without getting the hacksaw out you are not really going to know.
I was using ryco before and cant tell any difference.

I cut the new ones up with a proper oil filter cutter (for race teams, to check what is happening in the motor).

Did you cut a Ryco filter up to compare with the AC Delco one? I'd be interested to hear the results of that, as would the originator of this thread (pridhac) I imagine.

Have a friend who works for toyota and he cut up a OE filter and a ryco, there is a difference.

I used to use ryco on my 4runner but on my cruiser OE all the way

Im guessing the ones with a lower mircron rating than the highest.

Ryco are crap, made in indonisia where all the other cheap filters come from ie- sukura, osaka etc.
They brand it Ryco & charge a shit load for it.

Best filters (air, oil & fuel) to buy are donaldson, fleetguard & baldwin.

When it comes to diesel oil filters you can't get beter than fleetguard or donaldson.

Just a note- even the best of these full flow oil filters will be lucky to filter down to 20 microns absolute.
If you realy want to protect you diesel donk a bypass filter setup is the way to go. Most of these type of oil filters will filter down to 2 microns.

Considering the latest ryco i just put on my Prado said made by GUD in NZ... i think your talking out your arse, or have a vested interest....


BTW- Any prado TD owners out there, DONT buy a Z380 for your fuel filter- its a Z252-X now....

Coincidently... anyone with a HZJ80 want to buy a Ryco fuel filter?

Sorry mate that I was'nt precise anough to say the majority of Ryco filters come from Indonesia.
Anyway made in NZ does'nt inspire a great deal of confidence to me, unless your one of them.

I trust the kiwis much more than id trust the indonesians!

Guys, Cut open a toyota diesel filter and a ryco, and you will soon know who is shitting in your backyard....no comparison on 1hz, which use two stage filtering, and actually filter the return to sump oil through the second stage which is finer to catch soot.....a m8 runs a z9 with adapter on his hdt and it is still alive, but shit, i woudnt...mine just cost 3500 to rebuild, and im using genuine for $27 each (buy 10 at a time on ebay)

Interesting...most mechanics i know couldn't give a fuck what filter they use...more testing required me thinks..

So I take it OEM shits all over the ryco then. Got any internal pics of the 2 to compare?

I cant find the link, but there is a website dedicated to ryco filters and how poor they are. I still use them because I havent had any issues. The biggest issue was in the anti-drain back valves ( when mounted vertically ) On the hilux and cruisers they mount horizonally and I dont think it matters.

A ryco filter will generally make a 6 cylinder falcon tap at start up first thing in the morning. Change it to a genuine motorcraft and it wont happen

Doesn't sound like it's worth risking to me. Toyota filters are:

Air: $55.00
Oil: $41.25
Fuel: $61.05

Ryco are about $30 a piece....These prices are for a 1HD-T

$61 for a fuel filter
