4d56 2.5L NH Harmonic balancer troubles

A mate of mine has one of these where the Harmonic balancer keeps spinning (done it 3 times I understand), this has done some chewing of mating surfaces.

Does anyone have a good old Australian ingenuity way of making this engine work again reliably without going the $2500 route, as this is what he has been quoted.

Not sure what the problem really is as I have not seen it, is it typical of these engines? also any advice where parts can be bought cheaper than the dealer markup.

Could it be the bolt no longer actually places adequate pressure on the harmonic as it comes up hard on the crank shaft end??

This bloke has just won his 2 children from his X (bad egg) to add to his other 2 and is doing it tough as his job pays bugger all for a family of 6 to survive on these days, I suspect without some cheap way the car will sit for months.

Look forward to any advice,

cheers fnq

This is a 4D56 problem, often after a cambelt, I suspect insufficent torque
Is the keyway chewed on the crank ?.If the crank is not bad, loctite and a good pulley and key should fix it.
I have heard of one coming off and supposedly twisting the crank on the way off.

mines in getting fixed right now for the same problem, the bolt on the crank works loose.

Mine has wiped out the keyway and rooted the crank, decieded to fork out the extra for a full rebuild (turns out to be a good thing as the cam was also rooted, one lobe worn off from a seized lifter).

jump over to www.pocuk.co.uk and there are a few threads on it.

Thanks for the good advice, still working on which way to go, great link-thankyou, found a hundred post about the same problem most certainly a weak link in these engines.
