What are the up and downs points in chain driven transfer cases? Can anyone explain the difference to me to a geared transfer cases?

Plenty of reduction gearing available for gear driven cases. As for general service life, driving, etc pretty unfamiliar with chain cases.Sean wrote:G'day,

chain case's are quieter, dosen't appear to be any issues with wear on the chain.
gears can be expensive any were between $1000 and $3000, but no other mods are necessary.

the biggest problem i had was with the vit motor and the chain drive transfer case running the 31' i got a horrible shudder through the transfer case lever and the car..
Depending on what you've got planned in mods it should be ok to run and if you break the transfer you'll find one easy enough i've got one as a spare under the bench

The only reason I could see to swap in a chain drive case if you had a gear drive one would be if you wanted a super quiet street sierra. There is nothing really wrong with them, but they have unfavorable gearing and less options to fix it.
Note that chain drive cases are shorter so they require a longer front driveshaft and if I recall correctly a longer jackshaft too. (and vice versa if you are swapping a gear drive case into a coiler)

I have a 1ltr case sitting waiting to find a home in the coily...anyone done this swap or know of any write ups? Can driveshafts be swapped with earlier models etc to address the legth issues?

Also the chain can wear out they cost about $370 from a nice dealership there is no such thing non genuine. I just changed mine two days ago.
