Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Got an 89 4dr (body #%@#d') 3.9 efi 5spd viscous and want to transplant engine into 82 2dr with LT95(tired).
Should I put the 3.9 behind the LT95 or fit new transfer to 5spd??
If so what sort of transfer, $? and can anyone plz tell me the different ratio's for high and low between the 2. Found the viscous had bad low range going down very steep hills!

Buy an LT230 transfer for the 4-door (much better than the borg-warner viscous). One from a disco costs about $500 from a wrecker.

Ratios are 1.2:1 high and 3.32:1 Low.

The body on my 4dr is rooted so have to swap engine etc into 2dr. Will the LT230 bolt str8 up to my 89' 5spd?? Will the LT95 have better low range for crawling??

The LT95 has a better low range than the LT77 unit, especially in first gear (I think the 95 has a 48:1 in first gear low).

I would use the LT95 myself as I'm not a big fan of the 5 speeds in general (that's why I went to an auto to be quite honest). A ruggard and noisy bloody lump of a gearbox but tough as nails and near on indestructable.

The LT95 would definitely be a better crawler - 1st gear is about 4:1 in the gearbox alone, while most rover 5 speeds are 3.3:1 in 1st.

Overall 1st low would be 48:1 with an LT95 and about 40:1 with an LT77/LT230 (unless you have a special model with the military first gear fitted - 3.78:1 - 44:1 overall).

That is with 3.54 diffs. But with a 5-speed you can fit lower diff ratios and still have something that is driveable on-road. Also there are MD kits to lower the LT230 low range from 3.32 to 4.3:1 or 4.9:1
