RAV4 rear main seal estimate

Post by jsttry »

Just found an oil leak in the g/f's 2002 RAV4. Local mechanic says it appears to be coming from the rear main seal.

Has anyone had to replace a rear main seal on a RAV4 before? If so, what was involved (gearbox out, CV's out, etc) and how long did it take?

Don't have a problem with the mechanic and trust his work, just need to find out what's involved and how long it would likely take as he hasn't done a seal on a RAV before.

Obviously the g/f doesn't like the idea of having to spend up to $1000 on her car.

Sorry to say it could be alot more, no doubt whern the gearbox is out they will find hte clutch worn (if it's a manual) worn CV's etc.

But, if ev erything else is good, it should take longer than a day to do the job. So say 8 hours X your mechanic's hourly rate should see you in the ball park.

If its not pissing out, leave it till the clutch goes...or if its gotta be fixed do the clutch anyway while its all apart. Whole job shouldn't cost more than $800 approx for clutch, rear main and labour.
