I don't know what you paid, but when I first bought my truck the timing belt was due.
Cost was $680 and that was with a routine $170 service so a tad over $500 just for the belt (they even replaced a broken crankshaft bolt).
This was at my local Mitsi dealer and for a 3.0 V6 Pajero.
All Jap cars have expensive spare parts, some are absolutely outrageous but some parts are reasonably priced there doesn't appear to be any pattern to it.
My mate has a 2.8 diesel Hilux and there is some sort of small vacuum pump attached to the alternator which is making a bearing noise (sounds terminal) - replacement part from Toyo is $870 + GST

Some prices make ya fall off yer chair - others are more than reasonable.

Dealers are nearly always going to be more expensive than aftermarket.

Mates got a disco - parts for his POS must be gold plated for what he pays.

i paid about the same for the exact same work that frank got done except for the crankshaft bolt. its a big effort changing timing belts.
