G'day, Instead of getting an adjustible torque rod is alright to just take the torque rod completely out? I only have a 2" spring lift. And also has anyone got any rigs set up at the front of the car for watercrossings? For example a tarp or something to go across the grile to prevent allot of water going into the engine bay.

Taking the torque rod out with standard steering is a no no.
With Crossover (or high steer) it can be removed.

Plenty of people use tarps on the front for water crossings or you can go for something snazzy like the micheles sacs water bra. http://www.michellessacs.com.au/default ... catid=1169

Thanks ausyota lucky I asked first before taking that torque rod out. Could have got messy

Y is it ok with X over steer but no standard?
I thought the rod was more to protect springs?

Not 100% sure but I think it has to do with the way the standard hilux steering with the J arm works foward to rear. The torque rod keeps the angle of the diff constant under hard braking/accelerating if it is removed the extra movement of the diff can cause the steering to move.
This can cause the vehicle to lurch sideways under hard braking.

When crossover steering (and an IFS steering box) is fitted it works side to side only and isnt affected by the diff movent.

Im no expert though. This is just what I have learnt web wheeling

Pretty much, except by rights with x-over you really should have a panhard bar, but that wouldn't work well with the leaves but the leaves hold the diff from side to side movement pretty good so you dont really need one. If you get what im saying........

As for the water thingy, yeh make up a tarp and put an oki strap on your fan, that will stop it from tearing up your radiator fins.

The hilux standard uses a push/pull system in its steering, as oposed to a left/right action. So when the front flexes, the action of the leaves and shackle move the diff forward and back. Without a torque rod, this action, as well as spring wrap etc, would make the wheels turn even though the steering wheel is not moving. If the torque rod is the same length and angle as the steering link that runs from the box to the j-arm, then this eliminates this problem as the axle is forced to move in the same arc as the drag link. When you go cross-over.high steer, you junk the push/pull system, and run a left/right action box from a IFS lux. This does away with the need to locate the diff so acuratley, and therefore allow you to junk the POS torque rod setup and get some real flex without binding up on the u-bolts and all the other issues.

Panhard rods can be run on leaves, as long as the angle away from parallel to the ground isnt too great. Leaf from end Rocky's had them. and i think Germo's zook has one on it. They will give a better steering response, but can also limit flex and load the springs differently too if not sorted well.
