Just want to know how these engines go. I am just dreaming about the future mods i could do. If it was reconditioned and new stuff like intake and new demon carby and extractors and sh!t like that would they be pretty good hooked up to an auto inside a shorty MQ patrol?

if your going to that effort to do an engine swap, dont bother with a fluffy.. go with a 308/350...

Don't waste you time or money with a 253. I have one in a WB 1 tonner. Uses just as much fuel as a 308 and wouldn't pull the skin off custard. Like Bogged said go 308 or preferably 350 or 383 stroker.

They go pretty good im an MQ,
small 4bbl holley and a set of block hugger extractors makes a huge differance as does an electronic dizzy.

Even a 350 Holley and the rest just left as standard works well, I'm happy with the 253 I have in one of my other rigs.... sweet runner !

They rev harder than the 308 / 350 and will keep reving long after number 7 has fallen out of the 308.
:bad-words:

You'll also get a far nicer zorst note out of the 253 aswell ;)

Fuel wise........ they dont use as much as the 350 or 308 but they are thirsty, the stock 2bbl Stromberg carby will see some good MPG figures but dont expect miricles.
LPG is the go

Cost wise they are as cheap as chips and there's plenty out there to choose from.

I had a Red 253 in my old 40 series. I was happy with it.

I tried all sorts of carbies. The best was a Rochester 4 barrel. But I eventually went with the Holley Projection EFI setup. That was awesome - revved nicely and worked on stupid angles  As Kingy said, they sound awesome aswell  Most people wouldn't believe that it was only a 253 under the bonnet ;)

i had a 253 in a 4runner and was very happy with it. a V8 specialist i know in brisbane says stay away from the 308, its an upgraded 253 turned into a 308, the 253 is stronger just dont rev the ring gear out of it, it was built to pull, not rev! or so he says!
