Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Here is my own personal dilemma and after reading through quite a few winch related posts things are just as confusing.

I have a MQ patrol with a 308, ex diesel 24v model.

So my idea is to run a 24v winch however 2nd hand these are thin on the ground so new is probably the go.

Money isn't specifically a problem, I can spend what i needed however for the amount i may or may not use a winch (yes i have only done a few tracks and no trips yet - i would prefer to have a winch before I need it, not after), Im not sure that spending more than 2k is justified.

So first Im thinking the Warn Tabor winch seems good. Quite cheap but slow and there is some negative comments around on this forum regarding this winch, and its motor reliablity and how suitable for the job it really is.

Next I read a huge Brawn winch thread and was decided on one of them. However they are slow (not specifically a problem) and it seems Brawn is out of business now?

Now I'm thinking high mount because i may as well have the best/fastest however $2800 for a 24v M8274 is going to be more than my 4x4 cost.

So we also have the Warn XD9000 and XP9.5 which seem very similar in spec. It seems the XP9.5 is not available in 24v (from warn.com)

So if i spend big on a 24v model my next truck is unlikely to be 24v however, but i think running a 12v winch from my 24v setup is going to be a pain in the arse.

So at the moment im sort of looking at a XD9000 in 24v. I think this should come in under 2k for the unit.

Second hand high mount, new 24v motor, why is it difficult to run a 12v winch?? your using a 12v starter?? you just take the winch off one battery only

I dont know the imbalance in charge will effect the batteries in the long run. There is a voltage balancing module however its not connected.

Second hand winch will be costing me like $1k anyway so may as well spend $2k and get new and know it is tip top condition. Ive heard some might say winches dont hold value very well but I think paying 1/2 the original price for a 5 or 10 year old winch is a bit expensive.

No doubt many people buy good 2nd hand winches but what about the ones which have been abused and neglected that you might not know about until you have it apart.. Especially buying equipment im not familar with I sometimes end up getting burnt.

I guess thats my logic, im open to other opinions.

If i can run a 12v winch successfully with my setup, that would be much easier.

T-MAX 10,000 pound 6.6hp winch $1000-$1050..

Do most people use the 9500 high mount or the 10000 low mount model?

It looks like hte 9500 has a 24V motor which would suit me too..

Know anywhere in Vic who sells it or is it just through the distributor All Vehicle Accessories?

Only himount in production at the moment is the warn 8000lb Himount which is available in 12v or 24v. A long time ago. There was a larger 10000lb, but I have never seen one. Only heard about them.
They are a good winch. And have lots of upgrades to make them better.
If you ever plan to compete and you plan to stay elec. Then this is the winch to have. As slowmounts just dont cut it. They are way to slow. They HS9500i is the only lowmount that comes close.
Alot of guys are just putting 24v thru a 12v winch motor. So no reason why the same couldnt be done to a lowmount.

Either Jaycar, Altronics or Oatley does a kit wich allows you to select 12 or 24v

It was a fancy dual battery controller which charges the primary the switches in the Aux
There was also a function with the outputs which allowed you to switch between 12 and 24V (batteries parrallel or batteries series)
May of read it in this months Silicon Chip magazine but it not with me ATM

where are they made

they are all probaly made in bloody china these days.. warn does have a good name but they are way too dear. its just the brand name so they upmarket their price and people buy them cauz they know it's a good winch. personally id go the cheaper t-max or mean green winch.

they also burn out a lot of motors, i wouldnt recommend it if your not using it on a comp truck

Shipping, duties, GST, importer markup, distributor markup....

As usual the same product in the states is 1/2 the price it is here.

I dont mind buying chinese products. If it is proven to work, can get parts backup and is 1/2 the price then I cant see the problem.

Any more feedback on the T-Max or other winches?

the new warn powerplant winches look awsome, on board air tank and compressor. duno prices yet but i wouldnt think it be too cheap

$3000.00 from memory. The motor runs both the winch and compressor.Available in 9500lbs and 12000lbs

im pretty sure the warns and the tmax's are made in the same factory dont quote me on that though

i am now on my third winch and wouldn't buy anything but warn or maybe even thomas. a mate had a low mount thomas and it hauled arse with never any trouble. i have a warn high mount now and i reckon it's by far the best winch i've owned. it doesn't fall to pieces on corrigated roads, i'm still on the original motor and i've had no solenoid problems.

What were our other 2 winches ?
