91 80 series GXL T/D for $13500 - is it worth it.

I,m starting to look at another diesel just due to the high consumption on the 4.5. I was looking at changing to a manual to improve economy. I like the petrol because it really goes now after the work I have done, on road I get about 14ltrs per 100kms on a good run, but off road it's killing me still. I think the auto is contributiing to the poor economy.

In any case there is a turbo diesel has been offered to me for about $13500. Has an ARB bar, 16 inch alloys and 285 BFG's rear tjm bar long range tank. Body is ok and is a manual. Has just run out of rego. Motor looks like it's had some work done with new welsh plugs on the head and a shiny head gasket , new silcone around the sump and nice shiny yellow paint marks on the injector pump. If I wait it'll go and I need to make a decision tonight on it.

Any help appreciated

That could be an OK price. How many K's on it?

Why don't you just fit LPG to the one you have. John Howard will pay for it.

Emo is on the right track. I own a 93 4.5L 80 Series running dual fuel. I run on LPG for my everyday stuff but as soon as i hit the dirt road straight on unleaded shes goes. It saves me heaps! Highly recommened it.

I sold my 91 T/D not long ago for about 17K with 228 on the clock it had some goodies on it but only alloy bar and no rear bar. Sounds like a pretty good price. You will be impressed by the power (once you get it moving) and the low range off road down hills is awesome. I used to get nearly 1000klms out of both tanks and tows really well.

Good price aslonng as nothing is falling appart on it...im rebuilding my diesel at the moment, and its costing 4k with me doing all the work....lpg is a good option... you will be running for 12 cents a km compared to 20 cents diesel......and Johnny will pay half.....get injected gas if you can afford 3500 up front.....more power than petrol and no loss on petrol...best system for your 4.5....gas and 4.5's are ok for years ASLONG as you get the valves adjusted EVERY 40k....

The 80 (you know, the one this thread was started about ;) ) sounds like a good buy to me.

I bought a 91 GXL factory turbo with 400K on it a fortnight ago for $11K, so half the K's for 2.5K extra seems fair to me.

Providing it's all straight and clean and mechanically sound etc etc...

Man i'm pissed off. I was all set to buy it. Rang a mate on Tuesday who deals in cars at a yard to ask what he thought about the price. Then kindly offers to get a better price for me, so I give him the details. Then he tells me a mate of his is looking for the same thing.

I rang the auction people yesterday arvo and they said " One the sellers (the guy who owned the car) mates is getting it for a mate of his that's looking for one.

Now I don't want to jump to conclusions cause I could be wrong but it looks sus. I don't care another one will come up, but it's the princilple of the thing. It went thru 2 dealers auctions and 1 public cause they couldn't get the price then I finally get them down to what I was looking for, then the next day it goes. hmmmmmmm. I'll find out one way or another. You can see where I am coming from.

I would make it worth your "friends" while and molotov a few of his cars.

Keep searching i guess.
I dont see many turbo diesels up for offer so i would hunt down this friend of yours.

Screw dual fuel setups :finger:
Love 80's, and love my diesel.

All the best of luck.

I could have bought a 91 Turbo Diesel at auction the other week with very little fresh water damage. Hadn't got into the engine or reached the dash. It finished at $6,500,00 I bid to $6,250,00. It was in good condition with mid 200Ks on it. No damage other then the fresh water. White,Aftermarket Alloys and a steel winch bar and winch.

Cheap ones are around. You just got to be in the right place at the right time. Which means going to every auction not just once in a while.

agreem I got our one about a year ago. I was looking for about 6 months and even though this one had more km's it meet all the needs and wants.

I know it is disappointing to miss what seems to be a good buy, but learn from it and something better will come around.

How did you find the auctions? I could not do it, looked at one 80 at auction and the injector pump was pouring fuel out of it while running and the timing belt was 40K past it's change date. I suppose that is why it took me so long to find it.

no worries, just gotta know what you are looking at and back yourself as far a mechanics go. It would be a bigger risk if you had next to no mechanical knowledge. I bought my current 80 for 9K and it's a 96 4.5 auto had 200,000 kms on the clock. Goes great, just drinks too much. I go to the auctions every week of I can on a sat and search online during the week to see what is coming up. Gotta know the prices out on the open market thought to see if your getting a good deal, otherwise you could spend more on one with no comeback at all compared to a yard.

In any case after this debarckle I'm probably do another conversion - I did it in the maverick. Only took 1 week end.

you should be able to smash that price champ.
I paid 7100 for a pov pack diesel 330kms on it with winch etc 6 months ago. with 10months rego.
GXL and turbo is nicer but i reckon its a 10K -11K machine tops.
preferably $8500
