Hey guys i have a 92 gq tb42 when i do the points she runs a treat but it will only last about 1000ks if im lucky
i done the obvious coil plugs leads resistor but im starting to get sick of doing the points all the time. would there be anything wrong with my distributor or should i just get a electronic kit and this should fix the problem? if so which one seems to be the most reliable.
any info would be much appreciated
cheers paul

This will be interesting to find out as I have a customers patrol at work doing exactly the same thing, was just about to fit a condensor to see if it would fix the problem, but it sounds asthough that may not be it..

Mate, Had the exact same problem a few years ago in my 89 gq pet/gas
Fitted an Pertronix Ignitor Electronic Ignition Kit & Have never had a problem since (2 years on). Reccomend it. Rough figure I think it was about $450.00 installed.

So do you know what was wrong with your distributor to cause the points to burn out?

I have the same motor/ignition set-up. I found the same thing replace points would only get a couple thousand k's before it was running as rough as before. I replaced the bosch points / genuine condenser with genuine points / genuine condenser and now get about 25 thou k's with no problems. And the price difference is about $27 for the genuine set from memory.

Thanks for your help mate, I will try that today and see how we go. Hopefully we are on a winner.

I just replaced my points for the pertronix ignitor setup. It cost about $220 mail order from Ontrack in Melb, and only took about half an hour to install (and is really faaarkin easy too - only two wires to join, and a little mod to the dizzy shaft that you can do with a small angle grinder).
The unit seems pretty bullet proof and is literally 'set-and-forget'

i agree with everyone else, give the points the flick, and go with the petronix ignitor. mines been in about 9 months now and hasnt failed me yet

I went the pirhana electronic system. 4 beer install. without any swearing!
either way, points are a total waste of time when you have relatively cheap, nearly set and forget type electronic systems which give you a much much nicer power curve!

Red goes on the ignition side of the resistor, i.e. NOT the side joined to the + of the coil.

"The red wire is to be fitted to the 12 volt side of Ballast resistor (a White / Black trace wire
)
and the Black wire is to be fitted to the Neg side of coil"
