Rocky Starting Blues

My '84 Rocky DL is not starting consistently

, I have taken it to 2 auto electricians and still no luck.
The problem is that it will generally start the first or second attempt but sometimes it wont start at all. When it doesn't start, the starter motor doesnt even crank over, but I can here the glow plug solenoid engaging etc.
They have replaced starter motor 3 times, ignition switch, earth lead and glow plugs, I have tested the glow plug solenoid myself also. The only thing left I think is the regulator although they claim there is nothing wrong with it.
Anyone else had this problem?
I cant even go bush cause I dont wanna push it back to civilization, lol

could be faulty starter relay. On mine (f75) it is under the dash on the drivers side.

Watch out... Nathan is thinking
Did you take a red 84 model for a test drive or something?

And it wouldn't start?

Oh well its all gone now, the starter relay is functioning brilliantly, I am heading for that voltage regulator, I think thats to problem...

Good to see you got it sorted Doc... i think tabrocky installed a electronic voltage regulator... he posted on here about it.
If yours needs replacing, might be worth a look.

Looks good so far, just stripped the regulator. Found that one of the points in it had a metal outer ring and its contact was sitting up on it instead of on the point itself which had warn down.
A little creative work with a piece of wet n dry and a thick feeler gauge for support and hey presto....
Starting fantastically so far but time will tell, it will take a few days to see if it is reliable again. I might look into the electronic regulator if need be.
I will post a pic so you can see where I mean, incase someone else suffers the same fate too.....
Thanks again guys....
..... Go the Everglades Green, camouflage style, so everyone wonders where the hell that bloody noise is coming from, lol
